Fall or Spring? When to apply for a transfer admission...

Hi,

I'm planning on applying to a few schools as a transfer student for either this Spring or next fall. I just returned to school after taking about 5 yrs off and have been going to school P/T in the evening in order to complete some of my more general education courses that I hadn't taken when I was in school before.

I'd ideally not transfer until next Spring, but I feel like there's probably more openings for transfer students in the Fall. Is one semester any better to apply (as far as chances of admission) than the other?

Thanks for your help,

It actually increases your chances of acceptance if you apply for a Spring semester rather than the fall. This is because there are less applicants at that time. In the fall, you are competing with more transfer applicants and if you would like on-campus housing, you are competing with the incoming class.

It is really a personal decision....some feel it is easier to transfer in during the fall rather than start mid year. I have a friend whose daughter transferred to a school in spring and ended up feeling like everyone had their friends and found it difficult. She left that school to go back to her original school. However, it depends a lot on you personally, how out going you are and how eager you are to transfer. Good Luck!

Thank you so much! You were such a great help!

I'm currently only a P/T student, and just started returning to school for the Fall semester (after 6 yrs). I want to stay at my current school on a p/t basis for about another year so that I can continue to get good grades to increase my chances of admission. I always passed everything when I was in school before, but I never really made any effort. I want to be able to show my improvement from the Bs & Cs on my older transcripts to my A's now. I'm worried I'll get discouraged if I don't get in, which is why I was asking about applying for which semester.

Thanks again for your help!

Really? You have a better chance of being accepted if you transfer in Spring? Guess I'll am for transferring in Spring 2010 after I get my AA in December '09 instead of Fall '10!

Note, however, that quite a few schools DO NOT ACCEPT TRANSFERS FOR SPRING TERM. So be sure that the schools which interest you even accept them.

It might be helpful to inquire for schools accepting transfers for spring and fall terms, how many spots are usually available. While there may be less competition for spring term, there may be far less spots.
