Fall orientation

So I will be of the country for most of the summer and will not be able to
attend any of the summer orientations. For those of you who have attended
the fall orientation, does it put you at a disadvantage compared to those who
attended the summer orientation? Will most of the better classes already be taken?
I'm in the school of natural sciences if that matters. What exactly do you do at the fall
orientation other than just registering for classes?
Thanks for your input!

Any input anyone?

You might want to ask to current students at UT. I don’t think you will have penalty for not attending the orientation.

It depends on what you’re taking. For example, I imagine you wouldn’t be able to get one of the “good” (that means easy) Chem teachers, but you should have no problem getting into the class itself, since they free up slots every orientation.
You might end up on a waitlist for a class, which is typical for CNS classes.

I actually attended the last orientation last year and I got a really nice schedule. Honestly, if you’re persistent, you won’t even have trouble getting into a UGS – which is the class everybody complains about failing to add to their schedule.

This may not answer your question but as a former CAP student I can tell you that orientation was a complete waste of my time. You have to attend pointless meetings and when its your turn to pick classes, a large majority of the classes you may need are filled and hard to get onto to the waiting list.

Going to orientation is a must as far as I know however, if it was made optional and you can choose classes at home (not likely) I would because it was a waste of my time.

I’m going to orientation tomorrow and Friday so I’ll let you all know if AAli’s statement has any legitimacy.

Summer Orientation is kind of useful if you care what your schedule looks like in the Fall. The earlier the better because that gives you the advantage of add/dropping classes all summer while others have to wait until they go to orientation to even make their schedule. I went to the first orientation and have already changed my schedule four times since new classes and times have been opening! I originally had 9 am classes mon-friday and no days off. Now I have fridays off and the earliest class I have is at 11 and none of my classes end past 4! So it just depends on how concerned you are about the times and what not! Hope that helped!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have one more question though. How will getting textbooks for my classes work? Since the fall orientation is august 17-18, will I be able to get my textbooks by the time classes start? Assuming i’d have to buy the textbooks directly from the UT bookstore, I was wondering if they would have enough textbooks in stock by the time I went to go buy them.
