I saw the thread about the Thanksgiving break. When we visited Pomona, some students indicated that they didn't fly home for Thanksgiving since less than a month later the Fall semester ends and the students have a month break. Another option for a long weekend is in mid-October. A student could head home after classes on Thursday or Friday and return the following Tuesday eve. Here is a link to the Pomona College academic calendar:

That will work for those who live within a reasonable distance, but not for transcontinental flights, alas.

Because of time or money or both??????

Both. You're spending pretty much two whole days flying to and fro. Plus, Southwest's $89 one-way flights have now jumped to $158 one-way. That's a pretty steep price hike. JetBlue is even worse. To do better, you'd have to spend money on ground transportation to airports farther away, e.g., LAX or Long Beach.

When is Parents' Weekend?

Family Weekend (it's very inclusive) is mid-February. This past year, it coincided with Presidents' Day Weekend.

If I wanted to go home for Thanksgiving, would it be a problem to leave on the Tuesday before and miss two days of classes?

From what I understand, students do make arrangements with their professors about missing classes around Thanksgiving time and making up the work later.
