According to the events calendar for 2007-2008, there is a week long fall recess in October. Does anyone know if students usually go home then, or if most students stick around? I'd like to plan a little trip, but if it's a time when most kids stick around, I might rethink that.

Some kids stick around. Some kids go home. Some kids go on camping trips. Some kids go on other trips with friends. It all depends...it's like spring break, just in fall in terms of what people do.

Great, thanks.

I went home, as did most other first-years. There are people who stay on campus, but keep in mind that the campus pretty much closes during that week (dining halls are not open, so you have to cook for yourself.)

My son is a freshman. He came home and said most of the other first years that he knew also went home. The buses to the airport were certainly crowded.

That's good to know. I won't feel like I'm taking her away from her friends if I plan a trip then.

Yes, most people leave campus for fall break. Lots of people go home, but many students take the week as an opportunity to do something new. Last fall I went backpacking in Kentucky, and the year before I visited friends in New York. I know lots of students who have spent the time volunteering in New Orleans, for example. I spent one spring break on campus and it was fine, but very quiet.

How active is the backpacking club these days? We used to go to the Smokies on break. Do they still?
