So I applied EA to Chapman and they requested my fall term grades, i suppose it could be worse, but I was wondering how likely an acceptance would be. I have a 3.4 GPA 1770 SAT ec: drama, photography, 1 week community service trip, 2 week exchange trip, 11 years of summer jobs.

What major at Chapman U did you apply for?

Communications, and i forgot to mention im in honors statistics

Hi Thecks,

The only applicable info I could find is the following:

Chapman University UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS FOR FALL 2011

Average high school GPA for first-year freshman 3.70

Test Scores Average Accepted

SAT Critical Reading 600
SAT Math 609
SAT Writing 615

SAT Total Score 1824

So a GPA of 3.7 and SAT of 1824 is the average values for admitted freshman students.

Your GPA is 3.4 and SAT of 1770. So you’re below the average but you are still in the running for admittance. I hope this helps. Hopefully your weighted GPA was at or above 3.70 for this past Fall Senior semester.

i dont know how much of a difference it makes but i also go to a well regarded private school. my gpa for the fall semester was probably about a 93

Has anyone who was asked to submit fall semester grades heard back with a final admission decision yet?

Most California high schools just finished their first semester and transcripts are going in this week. Maybe they have to wait for all of the fall term grades to come in before they compare and make decisions???

My dd just received a big fat envelope from Chapman in the mail today. It says “Great News!” on the front of it. Im waiting for her to come home and open it. So, there definitely is hope if Chapman does “Fall Term Grades Requested”. She finished her semester with a 4.4 which is the highest GPA she has ever had so Im sure that helped!

Hi Andi,
Congratulations to your DD! How exciting for your family. What is your D’s major that she was accepted into at Chapman U?

Thanks! Her major is Biochemisty and Molecular Biology. She was very happy today!

congrats andi!
sukahjoy–you seem to be very in-the-know about Chapmam…my DD was accepted early action to Dodge back in late December. Film Studies is her intended major. We visited last June but want to go back now that she’s been accepted and really look around at more of the dorms, eat in the dorm cafeteria, go to some classes at Dodge maybe, etc. I called the administration office at Dodge to ask about possible dates (we’d like to do it over our spring break which is early March). They said an email was about to go out about Visit Chapman days every Monday and Weds this spring. I thought that would be great because maybe she would meet some other prospective kids and hit it off, etc Well, we got the email today and it doesn’t sound like much more than our hour-long tour last summer. You might be able to visit one class. I was hoping for a little more from the admissions dept. Last year we ended up at Elon in NC on a day when accepted students happened to be there and tagged along on a wonderful tour of all the dorms, meetings for the kids, meetings for parents etc I am really hoping this trip to Chapman will seal the deal…I am SO impressed with everything I read about Dodge. I just want to have a great experience next month! Any ideas?

Congrats Andi0527 on your D’s acceptance. That does give hope to the rest of us waiting on decisions after they received fall grades. btw…Is her GPA on a 4.0 or 5.0 scale?

Im not sure. I think it is a 4.0 scale. How do you know?

Hi Vvsitalia,

Just to let you know I am a parent of a freshman son whom is attending Dodge College and have no connection to Chapman U. I did not even know about Chapman U befoe I started checking out colleges for my S because I did not live in the area. I spent the previous year gathering information for many different colleges to assist my son and using a paid college counseling service going thru the process of searching for information and determining the best Film & TV Production Universities to attend. I personally went to UC Berkeley so I have no ties to NYU, UCLA, USC, UC Santa Barbara, Northeastern, Emerson & Chapman U these fine Universities that my son was considering. It is your D decision on where to go and you don’t want to be blamed later if a University she attends does not work out for her. I have three (3) degrees and what I thought was very important in a college (not necessarily what my S thought) was having small size classes where the Professor knows you and encourages you (note all classes at Chapman are taught by professors; no TAs) and when you graduate you have the knowledge, skills & internships availability to get a job in your field; Chapman was that school for me after all of the research and luckily for us my S came to the same decision. Since southern California is in the middle of the Film & TV industry it made no sense to go to college anywhere else. My freshman S is already interning creating videos for a sports media company and has a radio show on Chapman Radio. It is so heartwarming that my S loves his classes and fellow students at Chapman. I can’t say I ever experienced that euphoria at any of the classes I took at the Universities that I attended. Whatever your D wants to learn or study the Dodge Professors & Dodge College will give her every opportunity to do so.

With that said Vvsitalia here are some of my thoughts on your questions (not organized greatly but feel free to ask me additional questions):

The best day for the family to attend is on Preview Day. It is a great day and very few students do not eventually enroll in Chapman after going thru it. If you can’t make it that day remember that Spring break at Chapman is March 25th thru 29th and students will not be on campus and there will be no classes that your D can attend.

Since your D has been admitted into the Film Studies program she is in a very powerful position. The film studies program wants her to attend. She can e-mail the professors in this department as many as she wants (I have found them for you; see below) telling them when she will be on campus and ask to speak to them and attend one of their classes. Note: she should attend the classes not her family. You can do something else.

Five (5) Film Studies Professors (in alphabetical order):

Bob Buerkle- University of Southern California, Ph.D. in Film Studies
buerkle@chapman.edu

Emily Carman- University of California, Los Angeles, Ph.D. in Cinema
carman@chapman.edu

David Desser- University of Southern California, Ph.D. in Cinema
desser@chapman.edu

Silvia Kratzer-Julifs- University of California, Los Angeles, Ph.D. in Film Studies
kratzer@chapman.edu

Nam Lee- University of Southern California, Ph.D. in Film Studies
nlee@chapman.edu

Note: one of the these Professors will be assigned to call your D on the phone and ask if she have any question about the Film Studies program and encourage her to enroll. There will also be a call from a Dodge College student as well.

For admitted students you have the following programs available:

Panther for A Day
This program allows students to sit in on classes (both GE and Dodge College classes), eat lunch in the cafeteria, and take tours of our campus. The official program is held Mondays and Wednesday from February thru April. You should receive an email invitation for the program from the Office of Admissions. If you have any questions, you can contact their office at (714) 997-6711.
If you are visiting on a Tuesday or Thursday, you can still arrange to sit in on a class here at Dodge College. Call (714) 997-6765 for more information.

Preview Day
Preview Day is the most important day to attend if you can make it!!!
This event is being held on a Saturday at the end of April at Chapman. This event allows you to spend the day Chapman learning more about the University, your major, what your classes will like, speak with faculty etc. It is a great chance to meet with students you will be attending school with, and get any last questions answered. You should receive an invitation for this event in March from the Office of Admissions, and I highly encourage you to attend if you can. In the afternoon after a free lunch for your entire family you will meet most accepted students in your major with all of the professors in your major (parents do not attend this they have programs for them at the same time) and also present students in your major. A real chance to get to know the program and what it all about.

Vvsitalia Note: At the Pankey Visitor Center they will give you free passes for your entire family to eat on campus. You should eat at the Randall Dining Commons located below the Sandhu Conference Center near the residence halls. This is where the student living at the dorms eat. It is open to the entire campus community and features a multitude of made-to-order food stations (all-you-care-to-eat). This is where your D can meet Chapman U students asking any questions (see additional dorm rooms). Also check out the rock climbing wall on the way out of this cafeteria; the highest climbing wall in southern California.

After the tour: Vvsitalia be sure to visit the Henley Hall basement. All dorms no matter which building you live in use this basement.
The Henley Basement consists of Doy’s Place snack shop, music practice rooms, a media room with comfortable chairs and a TV, John Biggs Conference Room, as well as billiard, foosball and ping pong tables. Students may also use the laundry facilities and fitness room, and enjoy the sounds coming from the Chapman Radio studio.

Note: If your D wants to see other dorms not on the tour she can stand outside a particular dorm that she want to see and she can ask a female student going in if she can show her a dorm room and the facility. I am sure that present students will be happy to do so.

Dodge College tours:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 9AM
Tuesday, Thursday: 1PM
Make sure to get the full picture. All prospective undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to sign up for a main campus tour and information session with the Office of Admissions. This will allow you to imagine your entire Chapman experience, including visiting the dorms, checking out the cafeteria and seeing where you would take GE classes and workout.
Talk to your student guide about their projects, classes and find out about the many internships that their fellow students have participated in. Hear firsthand what our students think, see the place in action and we have no doubt you will walk away with a clear vision of what your future can become at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.

Every tour is very different depending on which student is leading it.

In August the week before school starts, there is a two day orientation program for the parents and the students have a 6 day orientation program all stating on Tuesday leading up to classes that start on the following Monday.

Some of the Orientation notes I made that mioght be helpful to you:
My son is in heaven meeting so many new friends that have similar interests & intelligence. There are so many opportunities at Chapman it is incredible. To mention a few of the new things that I found out (besides the incredible Dodge College that leaves my son beaming every time he meets the students & professors there) Chapman offers easy accessible undergraduate research projects that you can work on with a professor, regular excursions to southern California businesses to help with networking throughout your 4 years there (they even printout business cars for students), Course of Excellence where you dine with top executives, faculty lead travel all around the world during winter and summer breaks for free, a library which is open to 2am everyday and 24 hours a day during finals with reference librarians available 7 days a week, free yoga & Zumba in the Student Union, lap swimming in the competition pool, use of the main basketball gym for playing basketball, all while being educated in Chapman’s very beautiful, architectural pleasing and safe community.

Their tutorial/writing center which is free for all students is for everyone (even those with an A- in a class and want to achieve an A). The center has students whom will proof read and help with the writing of any paper your student is writing for any class. The tutors all received an A in the subject there are tutoring and the center will find you a tutor for any class offered at Chapman.

Those whom are admitted to Chapman should consider themselves lucky. From the workshops I attended during orientation the number of applicants are increasing 5 to 10 percent per year but they said they have been at their max admittance number and their freshman class will not increase in size. Approximately 1,200 new students (includes freshman and transfer students) start attending Chapman this year and they received around 12,000 to 14,000 applications.

The many parents I met during orientation were quite smart with all having college degrees themselves. After the first day the students did not seem to need their parents around anymore. This showed to me that Chapman’s orientation program (along with the selectivity of their admissions process) makes Chapman freshman feel at home extremely quickly with their new community of friends. It’s going to be a great 4 years for my son.

Perhaps Vvsitalia there are some Dodge College Events going on when you are there to attend. Calendar of Events for Dodge College of Film and Media Arts:

Great article regarding Dodge College:
“Chapman University has an amazing film program," Sony Pictures Television president Steve Mosko told The Hollywood Reporter. “Dean Robert Bassett has done an amazing job attracting the top names in town to speak. Chapman is quickly becoming the place for industry kids to attend, both for the undergraduate and graduate programs. Additionally, we have had a number of interns from Chapman working here at SPT and they have been some of the best we’ve seen.”

^Great information.
Panther for a Day (where a prospective student can attend a class in the intended major or other areas) and Preview Day sealed the deal for our son, last year. He’s now an extremely happy freshman at Dodge and in the Honors College. He’s learning, maturing in leaps and bounds, and has meaningful relationships with his professors. DS is working very hard, loving the college and loving life. He also has a work-study job at Dodge College and earns money to cover all his own personal expenses.

We love seeing him so happy, thriving and engaged.

Preview Day will answer all questions and is great for the families, as well. Attend if you possibly can!

thats just what we needed to hear about. we will plan on that Saturday in April! Very exciting.
Sukahjoy thank you so much for taking the time to write all that down for me
It is so nice to hear how happy your son is!
