I've been scanning this board recently as I have more become interested in College Park...I want to apply (and major in Arabic/Psych) and hopefully get in for fall semester, but i'm really confused what the difference is in admissions for fall/spring semesters...?

Can anyone explain why they waitlist some for fall semester and accept for spring? Do you think I have a chance of being accepted for fall?

My stats: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1105282-do-i-have-chance-also-need-ideas-schools.html

Thanks.

Generally the higher the GPA and SAT, the more likely you will get offered fall admission. I agree with the response from xxxbro on your chance link. As long as you apply by the priority date (Nov 1), you most likely will get offered fall admission because of your #'s. If you wait until January to apply, you lesson your chances big time.

If you apply by November, Spring Admit is the level between accept and reject.
If you apply in January, it can either be that or, sorry we’re full but a lot of people don’t last more than one semester in college.

Just from the personal experiences of my friends, the ones who got Spring admission were white females with really good GPA’s, AP’s, and extracurriculars, but their math scores were a bit lower than the people who got Fall Admission and, in some cases, didn’t have as many volunteer hours. As far as I know, all of the Spring admits applied by the priority deadline. Good luck!

Do you think my math score is around high enough? I have a 690 right now but I plan on retesting on the SAT next fall to raise my score…

Also, how many volunteer hours do you recommend? So far I have:

Band/football games - 160+
Library - - - - - - - - - ~15
Tennis/Science Club,
hospital - - - - - - - - - ~55

----------------------> 230+

(I’m applying to volunteer this summer at my hospital again and my library, and seeing about volunteering at a daycare…This is the first year I’m not participating in a summer enrichment program so I can focus on my summer classes/working/volunteering)

Thanks :)

Band counts for service learning hours?

Some include band performances to the community as service, Gemini.

Also, I agree with janetweiss about girls with high GPAs and maybe not tippy top scores for the ONE spring admit I know.

Your math score is good. My friends’ scores who got Spring admit were probably just under 600. The number of hours you have are good, but I don’t know how much they weigh the type of volunteer service. My guess is that they’d rather see more hands-on community service (like your hospital hours), but that’s just my opinion. You’ve got a good plan for volunteering this summer, so that should really help.

It seems to me that Maryland is more numbers driven. My daughter was admitted and offered a nice scholarship two years ago. She had tippy top grades and scores, but little community service.

True about being numbers driven. I think the community service helps if any of your numbers are borderline, and definitely helps if you are aiming for College Park Scholars (from what their reps said)

Wish I would have known that band thing when I applied… Could have added 500 hours from Ravens band alone :o

Sorry, i should have been clearer…I don’t play IN my HS band. I volunteer as a student manager during the marching season (which lasts as long as our football team does and at events for our city’s major sports teams (which are invite only to play at)). lol Sorry if that was confusing…

(This was more hands on that my hospital volunteering IMO because I was one of the ones who lugged equipment, set it up, got the students ready/fed after and did anything my director asked me to do…At the hospital I actually did little more than serve customers in the gift shop lol (this was my job).
