Fall Weekend only for URM?

Pomona has quickly become one of my top choices; however my family is in a low income bracket and we cannot afford really any college visits, much less flying across the country. I was doing some research and came across the Fall Weekend Program; however, I can’t really tell if it is exclusively aimed at those who are URM. I am white and from CT so I would not fit that description at all, haha. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this program also includes those who are low income and would like to apply for a costs-covered flight out to visit Pomona? I’m considering applying ED, however I wouldn’t really feel completely comfortable doing so without seeing the campus first. I would feel horrible submitting an application like this if it wasn’t aimed for this purpose. Thank you so much!

To get the straight scoop, I would suggest emailing either the office that coordinates the fly-in: diversity@pomona.edu, or your regional admissions officer (a link to her email is near the bottom of this page: https://www.pomona.edu/admissions/visit/admissions-staff).

The Fall Weekend is for all underrepresented students in college. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • URMs
  • Low income students
  • First generation students
  • Students from rural backgrounds or states underrepresented in the elite colleges

…or you can just wait for @nostalgicwisdom to post! (Glad you’re still around).

I know someone who went last year and she said there were white people there! So don’t be discouraged. Plus applying wont hurt!

Pomona isn’t really known as a big URM school, so I don’t know what your worry was there?

You NEED to visit before you commit to this school. (Take a Southwest flight to Ontario, California.)
It’s all about fit because you have to be there for 4 years so you have to bite the bullet and visit. It is in the inland valley. The beach is not close, if that’s what you were thinking and the visit will tell you a LOT.

Are you sure you will qualify for funding? Need based aid is based on what the college thinks you need, not what YOU think you need.

@“aunt bea” you say Pomona isn’t really known as a big URM school. I don’t know exactly what you mean by that but Pomona’s admitted class of 2020 was 52% domestic students of color. http://tsl.news/news/5678/. Pomona was also one of 5 finalists (along with Stanford, Rice, Amherst & Davidson) for the Cooke prize for its commitment to admitting low income students. http://www.jkcf.org/five-colleges–universities-finalists-for-1-million-cooke-prize-amherst-davidson-pomona-rice-and-stanford/.

Pomona is super super super super super into diversity??? Like I went to an admissions conference when their admissions officers were there and they really emphasized their progressive admission policies and their % Caucasian is a lot lower than most schools
