fallen into the bandwagon - chances?

Alright I posted this in the "what are my chances?" board but I thought I would get a better opinion from this board.

I know that there is no way of knowing if a person can actually can get in, thus making these posts somewhat useless. I just want opinions on if I am JHU material, and if not, why?

Current Dream Career: Work in some major lab/hospital on Cancer Research

Plan on: Applying to JHU ED for Public Health

While I’m here, I might as well ask. Would Public Health be the way to go for me?

Anyways, the stats.

- note: my school implemented a new grading system with +’s (A+, B+ etc) this year, hence the 4.33333
- Counselor says Top 5%, maybe higher (school doesn’t rank)

Miscellaneous
- pretty sure I will have good recs (concerning recommendations, should I get them from the teachers who know me best or the teachers most relevant to my major? Is there a general rule of thumb that we should pick one liberal arts and one science?)
- in the past year, I have been reading up on Cancer research - should help with essays
- I know that I do not have many EC's regarding science, but I can show passion and devotion to other things, in particular service and music. Furthermore, I am not void of knowledge on the field of cancer research and science news despite the fact that I am not perhaps RSI or Siemans-westing award winner. Perhaps I can show I'm not some deadbolt in my essays?

I know I'm posting a lot, but I have tons of questions and believe this is the right place to ask.

The Magic Eightball Says:

OUTLOOK GOOD.

(Actually, I don't really know... remember, we're not admissions officers so whatever we tell you probably means almost nothing. I'd trust my college counselors over me, heh).

Public Health is an awesome major at Hopkins... I assume you'll do the Natural Science focus within that major, but if you get in, be sure to take as many of the Social Science Public Health courses that you can--they are the most interesting in my opinion.

I think you have a great shot ED~ but like Conchis said, we're not admission officers here :)

check out chemical and biomolecular engineering. one of the main research areas is cancer.

hey ryan, thanks for the reply.

what's the difference between chemical and biomolecular engineering and biomedical engineering?

And what's the difference between those and biochemistry and molecular biology?

you have a very good chance at hopkins, just write the essas well.

You have good chances

Chemical and Biomolecular engineering- a new department at jhu. It's basically the general engineering for chemistry and where you study biological molecules to create chemicals that react with them.

Biomedical Engineering- this program requires a seperate admissions process because its enrollment is limited (a whole lot of people apply, and JHU doesn't have the resources to manage them all). It's the largest major and department as well. The program is famous because it is the only major/department directly linked to the medical school. More emphasis is put on physics and biology than ChemBe.

There is no Biochemistry major. The closest thing would probably be ChemBe. I don't remember if there is molecular biology major.

Hope that helps
