Falling in my junior year...

I used to be a straight A student in my school, and I was at top of 950 kids (HUGE SCHOOL!). But, then, I had to transfer to another school, and I took many honors and AP classes. In the first term of the first semester, I had all Cs and Bs (yes, I was struggling in my classes…both my old and new schools do really have different systems and GPA system as well- my old school had 10 point scale while my new school has 7 point scale and is more academically challenged; in fact, there were a lot of students accepted in top colleges, but in my old school, only one student was accepted in Harvard). But, I improved and got all As in my second term. But, because I screwed up in my first term, my semester grades are all Bs. Now, I know how to get As for the second semester. So, if I maintain to keep up and getting good grades in the second semester, will these grades cover my terrible first semester grades? By the way, I am thinking of applying to UVA, William and Mary, John Hopkins, Duke and possibly Stanford.

Your GC can note that the transition to the new school was rough, but that you are back on track. All the rest of your grades are excellent, and you are in-state for UVA so that's good. You need to be looking at some safeties at well. What are you interested in majoring in?

Will colleges understand my rough transition to new school, or will it still ruin my chance?

It won't ruin your chances ... but neither will it help. Your list includes match and reach schools, and you should certainly apply to them all. I think that, with reasonable SAT's, you will get into more than one. BUT the admissions process is random at times and having a less competitve school that you really like and can afford is just reasonable. Kind of like ... insurance.

Most kids, even on CC, have some sort of blemish on their resumes. You are lucky in that there is a reason for yours, and it didn't last that long.

One tip is not to spend much time thinking about stuff like this. Spend your time on your studies. Do your best and you will end up at a great school.

Last question to ask! Is my moving a good reason, or is it a bad "excuse"?

bring up my post

bUmP aGaIn!

Its a reason if your GC mentions that you bounced back from it, its an excuse if you dwell on in it in your essay.

I talked to my GC, and she said she will explain the situation in the recommendation letter. Ok, I am now relieved! Thanks!
