I want to send a gift card care package to an incoming Tufts student this fall.....
can anyone suggest appropriate cards for the Tufts area (restaurants, theaters, etc.) that a student would enjoy?

As a parent of a soon-to-be sophmore, I have to say that S did not venture off campus all that often as a freshman. The only restaurant he mentioned more than once was Anna's Taqueria, which seems pretty popular. The food in the dining halls is actually very good. There is a nearby movie theater in Davis Square, but I don't know the name. Wish I had better advice. Maybe a gift card from the Tufts bookstore?

Maybe a Redbones gift certificate?

A certificate to the Somerville Theatre in Davis Sq. or Brattle Theatre in Harvard Sq. would be great.

lspf, S. graduated from Tufts in May and Anna's was his absolute favorite eaterie. He tried to introduce DH and me to Anna's but we took one look at the spread and politely declined (ok, not so politely).

you really missed out, then; anna's is great

I'd be surprised if they sold gift certificates, though

I agree with you, hebrewhammer. I think there's a lot of really great restaurants in the area that don't do gift certificates, which is sad.

I certainly agree with abs294 and lolabelle. Redbones has amazing BBQ and cajun food. The Davis Square theater has some great shows.

I would add one more possibility. My son just completed his freshman year completely raving about Dave's Fresh Pasta on Holland Street. I gave him a quizical look when he first dragged me there, but this cool little gourmet shop has fresh made sandwiches, paninis, deserts, cheeses and more - and everything is extraordinary. No table service - if you eat in, you sit at a sandwich bar. Dave's has what he calls the best sandwiches and paninis he's ever tasted. I had to concur. (It's a required visit now, every time I see him) (Both for him and for me) Check out other reviews at

Not sure what your budget is but this was the best meal we had during our son's four years at Tufts: Changsho Restaurant, 1712 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA

That's funny, worrywart, because Changsho's is the only restaurant listed for which I don't care.

I love Dave's, and not every Tufts student is aware of its greatness despite its proximity to campus. Perhaps a gift certificate to Dave's would provide for a great meal as well as a valuable culinary learning experience.

I totally agree, Dan. I lived barely 2 blocks from Dave's for 2 years and didn't discover Dave's until this year. Their sandwiches are amazing (and of course their pasta is delicious too).

J.P. Licks? everyone loves ice cream! Except for people with lactose intolerance ugh

I'm lactose intolerant and eat ice cream all the time. Lactaid ftw.

If Border Cafe or Fire and Ice do gift certificates, they're both interesting/delicious dining experiences to be found at Harvard Square.

hey...this is kinda off topic, but I don't want to start a new thread for such a simple question. It matches with the topic title anyway...sooo

Do incoming freshman get free tufts planners? If not then I'm just gonna go ahead a get one now. Does anyone know the layout of those planners? weekly horizontal with three days on each side? The dimensions?

From what I remember, the Pachyderm (the student handbook) has a calendar/planner section, and I had a few friends that used it. I think it was the standard weekly one with three days on each page. I think it was approx 5" by 7".

The Tufts Bookstore has planners for sale that don't have the student handbook part in it. I always bought those because they had all the necessary Tufts information in it, like when Spring Break starts, when classes end, and when there was a substitute day (like when we had the Monday off for a holiday, which day in that week was replaced with the Monday schedule). I think they're around 5" by 7" as well, and are somewhere in the neighborhood of $10.

Why in the world would you buy them when the pachyderm was of the same value, yet absolutely free? If you don't want it to be so thick with handbook information, just cut that part out. Voila!
