family and college apps

I’m a young african america whose father left his family. i dont consider him “my father” or a parental guardian. The problem is that when im applying they ask for the names of your parents. I only list my mother. is it wrong to do so. I don’t want to list him as my father because he deserves no such title.

You should list him anyway, although I understand your desire not to. Best of luck to you.

This isn’t about personal feelings. It is about legal relationships. To leave it off is being uncooperative at best and submitting false information at worst. You must correct any wrong information that you have submitted. Especially if you are applying for financial aid all your financial papers must be correct.

Are your parents divorced? And how long since you last saw him?

they divorced last year.

Then it’s not acceptable not to list him. If the situation were that you nor your mother knew who your biological father was, then you could explain it. The fact that he’s emotionally affected your family is not a permissible reason to deny his existence when colleges may be making financial decisions based upon that knowledge that you’d have to attest to.

Sorry but this is purely a business matter – not a statement of familial unity or bonds.
