Family Business Job

Hi,

I've spent my last three summers working 20 hours a week or so at a grocery/general store that my father owns. (In additional to many other activities of course) The business has been in the family since we founded it 95 years ago. Its been a great experience and I've learned enough to basically do any job that can be found in your typical grocery store (produce, updating prices, cashier, shelf stocking, public relations, etc.)... but I can't help but wonder what effect that fact that it is a family business has on its perception. I mean, I started when I was ten, so its not like I ever submitted a resume or was interviewed or anything like that.

So what do you think? Would it have been to my advantage to pursue a job outside of the family business I grew up working at once I was legally allowed to hold another job? Or does the involved nostalgia (small business, family owned, etc.) overcome the fact that my father was my boss? Way too late to change course, and I wouldn't have things any other way... but I'm curious.

Grocery hahahaha

Community organizers are in much higher respect in this sickly paradigm of thought than true providers of jobs, my friend . . . . sorry to say but your truly useful experience is worth less for admission. However, being a community organizer or of some minority or sacrifice yourself in some kind of worthless community service will definitely help !!!

Working in the family business is fine. It is not any different than someone helping out at a parent’s restaurant or store. It is great for your connectivity to your family and community and shows your family’s priorities and work ethic. I think it is a terrific situation to be in. I bet you learned a whole lot about running a business.
