I will be applying to colleges this coming fall. Their have been some VERY MAJOR family problems during my high school year that have a toll on my grades. I just want to know how would I address this on the application. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you’re applying through the common app, there is an area that asks something like, “are there any special circumstances about you that should be known?” I’d link/paste it here but the common app site is down for maintenance until August 1.

Otherwise you could simply write a letter to the admissions office detailing your issue. It would probably be best to stick to the facts and not get overly emotional. App Counselors are human and have probably heard their fair share of difficult circumstances. Good luck!

Talk this over with your guidance counselor. He/she should have ideas about the best way to address this in your application.
