Here's a question: Do family connections have any influence whatsoever on admittance to colleges and universities overall? Or is this just a rumor?

I was wondering the same thing. My cousin is going to Washington University in St. Louis and I am applying there. Does that help me?

yes. if you are legacy you have a better shot of getting in. Though I'm sure it's not that much unless your father donated a lot of money or is famous.

generally legacy only applies if your parents went to the the school. so your cousin going to washu probably won't help

Depends on the connection. A cousin doesn't help. A parent and sometimes a grandparent makes you a legacy. One that has given generously makes you a more important legacy. A relative that gave a lot of money makes you a development candidate.
