Anyone have any recommendations for a Family Physician near Uchicago? My S has had two negative experiences with the docs at the the student health services and he is just looking for a good local doc.

this is a very good idea, as the SCC is… lacking to say the least.

SCC is worthless piece of ****.

Interesting.

My D had an excellent experience at SCC, including the diagnosis and management of a non-trivial medical condition.

Regarding docs near campus, like all heath care, buyer beware. Problem 1 is what is “a good local doc?” Problem 2 is that the local pool is pretty limited. Problem 3 is insurance.

You could check out [Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine - University of Chicago Medical Center](<a href=“Hospitals, Clinics & Doctors in IL - UChicago Medicine”>http://www.uchospitals.edu/about/dcam.html)

This is a practice independent of the student health service.

I have been reading this thread hoping for suggestions. I don’t have any. That tells you something. Two kids, seven years, two relatives who are MDs in the area, and I haven’t found anything. Both have had occasional issues for which a local doctor might have been nice, but so far have been unsuccessful at finding one who is convenient, recommended by someone, open for new patients, and is in our insurance network.

JHS,

As a person who works for largest healthcare system in the world, meaning I have a number of physicians and health care professionals with whom I work, I can agree that even for someone in the trade, so to speak, making choices can be difficult.

However, you must be aware that recommendations of non-professionals are often not worth much, unless you are just looking for good bedside manner (chairside for outpatient?).

Worse, it is true that insurance network issues can be a real killer.

What you wrote are some of the reasons why I found the battle over health care reform, especially the battle to preserve choice, so odd.

Choice for what?

we tried the university medical center. My wife was told that we had to have a referral from the student health service and that even if we did, we couldn’t get an appointment for several weeks. More and more I am finding that the administration of UChicago does not match its academic reputation.

I’ve been through this with both of my kids. In the case of my S, he had an ear issue that could not be resolved by the SCC and they did refer him to a doc at the Med Center. I might suggest getting the referral and making the appointment as a backup plan. If you don’t find a local doc, then at least the appointment would be in place. It didn’t take much to get the SCC to refer him out, just a gatekeeping appointment.

drdom,

What is your experience with getting appointments locally where you live? Do you think a several week delay for what I presume is not an urgent matter is an unusual delay? I can tell you it is not where I currently live. I get care at the George Washington University Medical School Faculty practice. 2-4 weeks is pretty normal there. My wife goes to Georgetown. It is even worse there. We used to live in Boston. No different there.

No, I’ll examine him when he comes home and if needed send him to a colleague. It is just that last time he received poor treatment by the staff, and his concerns were dismissed by the docs, that we wanted to bypass the student center if at all possible. I am fee for service and I don’t make my patients wait 2-3 weeks to be seen. When you know the diffential diagnoses, it is difficult to wait. He is also leaving in Sept. for a quarter abroad and he and we wanted to have closure before he left.
