Family income $10,000

I am an international student applying for financial aid at LACs including Bates, Colby etc. I have an average SAT (Math 650, Reading 650, Writing 730). Good extracuriculars and social work.

My family income is just over $10,000 - which includes my part time job's income. We do own a house - my dad bought it out of the entire savings of his life and my brother will be starting college at the same time as I will.
I have come across a couple of threads here where people are all like 'how is it even possible to survive in 10,000 bucks?' But it is. Living in my country is not as expensive as it is in the US. You can get an idea from the fact that the most prestigious, most expensive private university in my country costs about $7000 a year.

What are my chances (if I get in) of getting a good financial aid package at Colby/Bates/Richmond?

Any helpful experiences or comments will be appreciated.

Omg I wish I could be going to school in your country. My parents make the same amount or a little below as your household. I say it is really expensive living here in this country and everything from college to whatever life necessities are needed are expensive. Since you are an international student, you should look into schools that give international students full ride scholarships. Otherwise, it’s not wise to come here for college because colleges here do not offer a lot of money for international students. Heck, usually rich international students come to the US for college. Did you apply to colleges in your country what will give you a full ride at least?

Yeah I went for these colleges because they promise to meet 100% demonstrated need if you get admitted. I hope I will :frowning: Also, that’s the issue. Colleges in my country rarely offer aid, whether need based or merit based. So I am applying to a couple of cheaper ones.

I suppose that’s true. A friend of mine just went to Conneciticut College and he was all like the daily expenses are really high there, even cab charges etc!

Have you looked at the international page of each school’s financial aid website? Here’s the one for Bates:

[International Students | Student Financial Services | Bates College](International Students | Student Financial Services | Bates College)

Looks like they claim to meet the full need of international students and it tells you how to apply for aid. The school’s determine your need though from the information you provide.

I’m just going through all of this. Thanks for the link  I am afraid I am too late for a couple of colleges but mostly the deadline is 1st Feb so ill be submitting my financial aid app soon
