Family Job

Hey guys,

So I've been working for my mom's medical billing company for about 1-2 years, but I never really worked for it "officially" . I mean that as in not having a work permit as I worked, but I did work consistently 4 hours a day 5 days a week.

I've been wondering if this could still count as a job on my college application.

Thanks.

Yes. Colleges aren’t the Labor Dept or the IRS – your statement will be fine. They want to know if you do anything constructive w/your time as opposed to sitting at home watching Jerry Springer.

Thanks, anyone else?

LOL: I guess you didn’t like my answer. haha

Fine then. say you didn’t have a job if you’re so worried.

C’mon. There’s no over-arching big brother to see if you did under the table work. No one who sees your file will care – they see it all the time. And they aren’t gonna snitch on you or your mom.

You aren’t applying to the CIA or to be a Supreme court justice. It’s a line in your college app that people will spend 0.5 seconds looking at.

I also had some work experience in the family - my mum was a private tutor and I used to help her teach quite a lot. And I’m also not sure if I should list it or not.

List it. It’s all about listing the most complete and holistic application you can. The job won’t be looked at deeply but it can help. Your app. itself including transcript, scores, e.c. everything will take at most 5-10 minutes, and the essay takes most 5-10 minutes as well.

It’s a job as T26E4 said. But if you’re still worried, file a work permit with your school. My daughter works for her dad in summer too, I just let her file it with the school just as she is looking for a normal summer /part time job. She gets her pay check and W2. Everything is formal except no interview was needed. Husband is a CPA, so we like to keep these things “formal” :)

yeah it counts.

T26E4: Haha, nahh I actually did like your answer, I just wanted to hear what others had to say.

Thanks again guys

OK, here’s a related question, then. My teenagers sometimes do odd jobs for me / my company (I work at home, but do have an official office that I go to every now and then). The company name bears no relationship to my own name. Could they indeed put down that they did xyz type of work for XYZ Inc.? Even if it was the odd filing or entering stuff into a spreadsheet type of thing?

Sounds like you subcontract your work to your child. Anyhow, this seems diffferent than the OP’s case. He works consistently.

Vote no. You were just helping out your mom. Seems you are trying to force a EC

Yeah, a_mom, your point? :-)

I lean to no on this one. To classify as a job, I think,

 1. Get paid
 2. Have resposibilities & commitment
 3. Work consistently even only a couple of hours per week, otherwise it’s random job only
