Family Weekend 2015

We attended Family Weekend from Friday through Sunday this past weekend and we were so happy we came. On Friday the parents were able to sit in on classes in the morning; it was difficult to decide which ones to attend. It was a treat to see the professors in action and to see the interaction of the students. I wanted to hear more about the subjects, but then class was over. It’s amazing how quickly 50 minutes go by when it’s just one class; I’m sure I’d feel differently if I had to attend for the whole semester, but I don’t have to.

I was very anxious to try out a dining hall for lunch but understandably my D wanted to eat off campus. That experience had to be saved for the next day, where we had brunch at the “not as nice but closer to the dorm” dining hall. My H and I didn’t know what my D was talking about; we thought it was fabulous. We were very impressed that there were so many healthy and gluten-free options. My D eats much healthier at school than at home. I only have two kinds of fruit at home and the dining hall has about 10 kinds. After brunch my D had to go to work on campus while we watched a Pomona-Caltech basketball game, enjoyed a Pomona talent show, and munched on appetizers provided by the Parent Council.

After my D got off of work was my favorite time. My D and her friends and the siblings played football on the quad, young families picnicked on the grass, walkers strolled and bikers rode along the paths, and the weather was perfect. It was as if the college brochure had come to life. I really felt as if I got a good taste of my daughter’s life, and it’s a very nice life.

Libby, my wife and I were there too and were quite simply blown away by Pomona. Academically and aesthetically, Pomona is a jewel on par with if not exceeding in quality the leading Ivies that we attended as undergrads – with gorgeous weather thrown in for good measure. Our S/D couldn’t be happier and is excelling in a high touch and intellectually vibrant community of outstanding mentors and peers. We just hope our younger one is lucky enough to get in.
