Family Weekend in October

My parents are asking about the Family Weekend in Oct. When you were a freshman, do you feel bad if your parents did not not come? Does it make sense for them to come?

most frosh have just had their parents just move them in during orientation, and unless you're having an absolutely horrible time adjusting, it's notreally needful to see them til thanksgiving. frankly, if your family wants to spend time with you, they want to pick a time when you don't have classes; if they want to see how mit is when it has classes, they may find family weekend a slightly more useful time to come, but probably not a whole lot more than any other weekend.

point: if they want to come, it's a useful way to pick a random weekend, but if other circumstances intervene, it's not a big deal. not everyone has visitors, and frosh especially may not want them, but every family is different.

My parents came freshman year, but didn't come sophomore year. I was a little sad when they didn't come, but it was more because I missed them in general rather than specifically that they didn't come to Parents' Weekend.

If your parents are coming from far away, it's sort of odd for them to just come for one weekend. My parents would always fly in on Saturday and leave on Sunday evening, which I thought was weird. Why pay all that money to come for two days?

If your parents can, you might advise them to come for several days or a week -- that way you can see them a few times, but won't feel like you have to see them every day they're in town. Come October, you'll have plenty of school stuff to do!

Shop - fall is a great time to be in New England. You family might enjoy combining Family Weekend with some driving around to look at fall foliage, or a trip to Cape Cod. Looking at the academic calendar, the week-end before Family Week-end looks like it's a 4 day week-end for MIT because of Columbus Day.

Ugh, I wouldn't want my parents in town over a long weekend. Long weekends are my time to catch up on sleep.
