This is our 4th Family weekend. If you are going to the game, and taking your student out to dinner, you’ve covered the most important parts already.

I’m not sure if you are up Friday night. The college choir is very good, and Casino Night is lots of fun, but neither are targeted at an 11 year old. There is a haunted house this year, but I don’t know anything about that. I’m only an hour away, so I generally leave my younger kids at home Friday and just bring them up Saturday. In case you haven’t seen it, there’s a 3 page list of activities on the web page. Click on “Parents & Families”, then on “Family Weekend”.

There is definitely tailgating, with alcohol, before the game. You’ll be on Freshman Field, with lots of other families and other fans (including some Georgetown fans). If the weather is nice, there will be 5,000- 8,000 fans there, maybe more. People set up tables and grilles. I posted the tailgating rules below.

After the game, some people go to mass before dinner, others hang out in their kid’s room or in Hogan. At your restaurant you’ll probably see a lot of other HC families. Afterwards people drift back to Hogan or their kid’s room. There’s also a dance thing and some great a cappella shows. Those draw good crowds - lower Kimball is generally filled for the a cappella . There is also the pub. There is no “must attend” event Saturday night, but it is a fun weekend. It’s great to see your kid so much more comfortable after 2 months of college, and meet the friends and their families.

Your high schooler will enjoy staying over. There always seem to be younger siblings visiting on weekends. It’s fun, and eye-opening. There’s nothing special for the 11 year old, but enough different things Saturday that he won’t go crazy.

There’s no dress code for any of these events, but most people dress nicely at night. Nice pants/shirts/sweaters. I guess that’s business casual - there are not a lot of jeans and sweatshirts once the game is over.

Holy Cross Football Tailgating Policy

As part of an ongoing effort to promote a healthier and safer campus environment, the College has implemented the following policy regarding tailgating activities at football games. Beginning in the fall of 2005, the following guidelines regarding tailgating will be in force:

Tickets will be required to park on Freshman Field.
Freshman Field and the Baseball Field will be open for tailgating three hours prior to kickoff.
No kegs or other common-source large quantities of alcohol will be allowed at any time.
At game time, both fields will be cleared by Public Safety and Worcester Police officers, and all individuals will be asked to enter the stadium or required to exit the premises. Those who refuse to vacate the field will be viewed as trespassers and will be subject to police action.
The Hogan Pub will be open for those who do not want to attend the Football game, but wish to continue socializing.
No individual will be permitted to exit the stadium and linger on Freshman Field during the game (including half-time). The Baseball Field will be open during half-time, allowing fans to utilize the “Interactive Endzone” area.
Full tailgating (setting up grills and tables, etc.) will not be allowed on either field after the game. All fields will be cleared within one hour after the end of the game.

Our aim in these policy revisions is to curtail excessive drinking - with special attention to underage students - while maintaining our tradition of Crusader camaraderie and fellowship. We thank you for your support of these policies.
