I get to go to Family Weekend for the first time this year (husband flew up last minute last year--I stayed home with younger kid). I know we're allowed to sit in on classes. Any other ideas or tips on what to do, etc.? (This is my big chance to live vicariously in more than a virtual way.)

When you arrive, head over to Sayles to pick up information. There will be a schedule of classes available to you on Friday. I think the list encompasses all classes that day, nothing appears off limits. The first 3 years, D forbade me from attending classes WITH her, so either I wandered into others of interest to me or visited a different session of a class she was taking. I think I had more fun and learned more about Carleton by attending classes in disciplines other than my D's. Have a great time!

Attend Convocation, buy Friday flowers, hike in the Arb, eat waffles at Sweet Lou's, shop downtown Northfield, eat pizza at Basil's (yum), enjoy coffee and wireless at Goodbye Blue Monday, check out the bakeries in town for information about sending birthday cakes/goodies to your student, attend Robert Oden's state of the college address (and report back here, please!).

Thanks for the tips! Excellent one about heading to Sayles first for a sched., M&B. We're flying in on Thursday so that we can attend some classes.

I spent almost every morning at Goodbye Blue Monday when we were there for freshman drop off. And how do you buy Friday Flowers? Is there one florist that does them?

Friday Flowers will be on sale in Sayles until around 1pm. There are two local florists that trade off Fridays. According to daughter, most flowers are $1, roses are a bit more. Be sure to put any flowers you buy in the mailbox.

Sunday morning go to Dacie Moses for Sunday brunch (110 Union, just a few doors down from Musser)

If you get online after you see the available classes, post here. Some of the folks here may be able to tell you some "don't miss" profs.

You've already got lots of food suggestions - I'll add Chapati nr 2nd and Division for good Indian food. I also love the Contented Cow, a pub on Division a few doors down from Chapati.

bingle, excellent suggestions. :) During drop-off we ate at Chapati, and we spent several afternoons at the Contented Cow--great beer and sun deck! Yes, we'll have to arrange a meet-up at the Contented Cow next year.

I had to do quick mental review--yes, I've only been to Carleton once--it just seems like it had to more because the place looms large in my memory.
