family weekend

My family can not get out to parents weekend until very late friday evening. I was hoping to have 3 days with my freshman daughter, but it turns out all the events are thursday to saturday. (not a weekend in my book) Is it worth still going? especially since I could fly her home the following 4 day weekend?

I can only relate our experience last year. Of course keep in mind I am also an alum so I know the campus and school well. If this is not the case for you it might seem different.

The activities scheduled really seemed kind of beside the point to us. We just valued it as a chance for our D to get to show us what she was doing now that she had settled in, to in essence show us her “new home” and meet her new friends. It was nice because of that (and of course always a chance to see her, since there was no 4 day weekend following it last year, I don’t think), but otherwise it isn’t a big deal. Also, she will hardly be the only one without parents coming if you decide not to go.

Don’t know if that helped, but at least one perspective.

We attended Family Weekend last year when our S was a Freshman. We didn’t do anything that the school planned. We took him to restaurants, food shopping, a swamp tour, and met his friends. He then came home for Fall Break 3 days later, which was great. This year he is a sophomore. We are not going to Family Weekend nor is he coming home for Fall Break. I am already thinking about how I will spend all that money that I will be saving during that 1 week in October. :)

I’m looking forward to the football game versus Army. S2 has a close friend at West Point and he is going to try and travel with the team in order to attend the game and meet up with us (though briefly). Since we live so far away, S2 is not coming home in the fall, so we are really looking forward to the visit; the campus activities are not high on the list (outside of the game).

Tulane’s football team is unfortunately usually snack fodder for the opposing team, but its fun to spend time with your kiddo. We went to parents weekend freshman year (and my DH was on crutches following surgery for a broken ankle/leg). We signed up for the cooking class, which was fun, but I apparently ate something shortly before the class that didn’t agree with me, and I …err… missed most of the class.

We didn’t go to parents weekend last year, but both my H and I had conferences in NOLA at different times last year so got to spend time with DS and enjoy the opportunity to feed him and a few hundred of his closest friends (only a slight exaggeration). Not sure if we will pull it off this year. I’d rather go during the jazz festival, but thats usually close to finals, so we’ll see.

FYI, my wife tells me I am wrong (a frequent event). My D did have a 4 day weekend after the Parent’s Weekend last year. She stayed at Tulane. I think besides everything else I mentioned, eating in New Orleans as often as possible was pretty high on the list of reasons to go to Parent’s Weekend too. Alas, we are not going this year. I get the impression most parents don’t after freshman year, if they even go then.

BTW idad, you will be happy to know that my D and I ate at Dante’s Kitchen move-in weekend. Simply fabulous. Our server was a 2nd year Tulane med student who had been an RA in JL for the section my D is in now. Had a great talk with her besides the fantastic food. Thought you would want to know.

FC, you may have seen us there. We took S1 (along with S2) to Dante’s for brunch and it has almost convinced him to leave Chicago, his girlfriend, and upcoming job and move to New Orleans.

LOL, we might have!! For us it was Saturday Brunch, probably about noon I think it was. You?

Funny, DD, DH and I ate at Dante’s on Thursday night of move in weekend. First time for us and we loved it. Planning on where we are going to eat on Parents weekend. So far, Jacques Imos is on the list. It was totally booked on Saturday of move in so it is on our list for this trip. We also ate at Guys, Pascales and Dick and Jennys. Loved Guys and Pascales. D&J’s was just ok for me but others loved it. DD is a total foodie so she loves all the new foods to try. Her two sisters may have a little trouble though. Dont think I could get 14y.o to eat buffalo ribs or shrimp with their heads on! LOL

FC: We were there at about the same time! We also ate at Voodoo BBQ, which was also quite good.

Funny, probably right next to each other and had no idea. Although I had a shirt on that day that had the old “fighting wave” logo stitched on and embroidered above and below was “Tulane Alum” “Tulane Dad”. Subtle.

I was wearing a white baseball cap with “Tulane” printed on it. Wife was wearing her “Tulane Mom” shirt. We definitely do not hide our new affinity for Tulane either.

Where will everyone be dining on Parents weekend if you are going? Looking for a few places that might have some local flavor but also have something for those that are not food adventurous. DD wants to stick with local places and eat cajun/creole. Siblings are not looking forward to unknown food. Hoping to find a middle ground.

Also, can you just walk up to the superdome and get a ticket for the game? Does anyone have any idea the price? Tulane has a family weekend “registration” site but you have to pay a $25.00 per person fee which entitles you to a campus tour (been there, done that), lectures, pep rally, fireworks and jazz brunch. Not of interest to DD and younger siblings. So, we are going off on our own. Thanks.

Is the game at the dome this year? In past years they’ve held it at an outdoor field and provided bus service to/from

I heard the first game is at the Dome, so maybe the others are too? I am too tired to look it up after hauling in everything from my deck, yard, etc. ahead of Hurricane Earl, but I actually am glad it is here and not down there.

woohoo! scored a prime table for 8 @ commanders palace for saturday night of parents weekend at 7! Told son to invite all friends that brought a jacket to school (that’ll teach them not to listen when their mothers say “pack a sports coat”)
