Famous Harvard Students (Do you see them?!)

I've always been curious about how it works with some of the more famous students. I would tihnk it would be really weird having a class with Natalie Portman and saying, "soooooooo, Star Wars was good" or asking Rivers Cuomo how the new Weezer album is coming. Maybe I've been watching E! too much lately, I dunno, but I'd e really interested as to what current students have experienced with this.

Natalie Portman didn't live on campus, but she was definitely visible during her four years. I have a friend who sat next to her at a hasty pudding dinner. Rivers might be more reclusive.

She did for the first two years -- Grays and Lowell House. My ex-boyfriend was in Grays with her.

In my experience, other students try really, really hard to act like it's no big deal and to treat famous kids like everybody else. Does a whisper go through the room when a big movie/rock star walks into a party? Yes. Everybody notices. But then people go back to what they were doing and pretend like they aren't impressed. It's taboo to talk to them about their fame unless you are close friends.

Rivers Cuomo was said to be enrolled this past school year, but my daughter never saw him. She was a freshman and he is an upperclassman, so their paths were less likely to cross. She did see or know of one or two minor celebs in the form of beauty contest winners though: "Miss ______" (fill in the blank with an Asian country).

A current freshman, she wrote a best-selling book for the home market about how she gained admission to Harvard, called "Anybody Can Do It."

Then, of course, there is Erika Harold, Miss America 2003, who is a student at Harvard Law School.

Hanna, thanks for the correction.

I revisited the question with my daughter, and she confirmed that she never did see Rivers Cuomo. However, another guy in her dorm had a class with him, so it's not like he was invisible or never there. He lived in Cabot. Also he was up on Facebook but had it rigged so that only other Harvard students could find him and access his page. She said he had about a thousand Facebook "friends", all from Harvard.

haha, i love weezer. I think im the only one who likes the new album though. Anyone else?

I like that one song I hear on the radio all the time. I haven't heard any others...

who the heck is portman?

Natalie Portman is a famous actress.

u know the one in Star Wars

shes in a lot of movies
closer, garden state, star wars and a buncha others

My roommate was in a class with Rivers last fall semester.

what about MATT DAMON?

Personally, I don't think that Harvard has THAT many famous students that would be weird to talk to. I think that other schools have students that would be far weirder to talk to. For example, my father knew a guy who took classes with Michael Jordan at UNC, and even then, everybody knew that he was going to be a huge basketball star. I know a guy who played on the Stanford golf team - with Tiger Woods. And then of course there are the truly sublimely weird scenarios, like to meet Chelsea Clinton at Stanford or the Bush daughters at UTAustin or Yale. I take it it may be hard to talk politics when you got the President's daughter right there in the room.

ha ha... Hillary Duff is a Harvard student isnt she?

My dad taught portman, when we were on sabattical. I've never met a nicer person in my life.

Hillary Duff is in a non-degree Harvard Extension School program taking classes online.

natalie portman babysat a friend of mine when he was younger haha
