@ nybor904 I totally agree he and Christiane Amanpour are the two best reporters on CNN. I’m completely obsessed with the whole Vanderbilt family lol, I just think their lives are so fascinating.

^ whoa. Ditto! I idolize all the “trust” businessmen of the late 19th and early 20th century. They really knew how to do business, they knew how to deal with people, and they knew what it takes to become successful… Just be the best at what you do.

@ Lobzz

Dude, you have no idea how cool it is to find someone other than myself fascinated by business transactions of the Guilded Age, LOL, I thought I was the only one!

@organic1992

I was just thinking of doing Holden Caulfield! But then I decided I wasn’t going to b/c I’m using Catcher in the Rye for the literature/movie character essay question. Any one think that’s too generic? I"m applying to Stern if that matters at all.

I’m also thinking of Stephen Sondheim maybe. Or Anderson Copper…

…I totally would’ve beasted on that question about the song you would sing at a talent show! grrrr…

It is a bit generic but as long as you write it well you should be fine. Its a book that you know everyone has read so it is easy to assume that as long as you write it well, the reader can relate to it.

Hmm, thanks. The only problem is, I don’t know what other book character I could right about because Catcher in the Rye in like the only book I’ve read in a while that I’ve actually enjoyed the whole time I was reading it. I don’t really get to read much outside of my English class, and when I do, it’s usually a fantasy like Harry Potter or the Hobbit.

What ‘literature/movie character essay question’?

I actually got that confused with the essay question for Fordham. But the similar question I was referring to for NYU is:
“Select a creative work- a novel, a film, a musical piece, a painting, or other work of art- that has influenced the way you view the world and the way you view yourself. Discuss the impact the work has had on you. (We are more interested in how the work has affected you rather than reading a detailed plot summary or a description of the work.)”
Now that I have re-read the question, I realized I’m not just limited to books, so that’s good. lol

i have a close relationship with cnn and Turner broadcasting because of the teen newspaper where i work at, and one of our alum is the dotcom’s director of operations, and i sat in on a new-cnn worker workshop and saw a video about working/ workers at CNN

i said all that to say that i learned this (and show off) ![]()
Anderson Cooper is based in CNN new york
cnn has many satellites, so people like Robin Meade are based in Atlanta, Wolf Blitzer in Washington, Larry King usually in LA, and Anderson Cooper (i love him too) in NYC. they’re based where their expertise is, and Cooper is a NYC kind of guy, (though i wish he stayed in Atlanta because that’s where i live) hope it helps

is this prompt for the embark or common app?

I want to do Sylvia Plath but I’m not sure if she’s really that much associated with New York City. I just thought maybe it could work since New York city was the main setting in the Bell Jar, at least for the beginning half.

I’m a cynical liberal, but I used William Buckley as my example cuz I thought it wud b cool to use a flaming conservative as a counterpoint. My advice is dig deep, look at your interests, than wiki or imdb ppl. who have some sort of attachment to NYC that you’re interested in. Also, allowing ppl. to use fictional characters gives us even more flexibility.

It’s a prompt for Embark.
The reason I’m not using Common App for NYU is because I want to really focus on NYU specifically.

Oh, because I’m also using embark but under the essay prompts, I don’t see this prompt. The ones I see are
A. The best writing is often very personal. All kinds of experiences-serious, funny, unexplained, fleeting-can influence our lives and help make us who we are. Tell us about a person, place, or event in your life that has particular meaning for you, and why it is important to you. We’d especially like to hear about someone or something that has affected your life that may not have affected or even been noticed by other people.

B. Select a creative work- a novel, a film, a musical piece, a painting, or other work of art- that has influenced the way you view the world and the way you view yourself. Discuss the impact the work has had on you. (We are more interested in how the work has affected you rather than reading a detailed plot summary or a description of the work.)

C. New York is a city full of people from other places. They all bring with them a story of where they are from. Tell us something about where you’re from and what single facet of your hometown experience has shaped you into the person you are today

@frsh24
It’s a personal statement. No more than 8 lines and 600 characters.

vince lombardi ftw

sylvester stallone

I used John Stewart. If I get into NYU I definatly want to be a daily show audience member.

I put Frank Sinatra :)

is lady gaga appropriate?
