So I applied ED to Hopkins and I didn't find out about CSS until later on, and it's already 12/14 the day before decisions come out. I don't know what to do and the senior associate director e-mailed me and told me to send it to him this morning but I'm at school and I don't have any of my family's financial information on hand. Also, tonight, I'm not going to be home until 8ish so I don't know what to do!

Does FAFSA give more money, or CSS? And does CSS affect FAFSA in anyway? My family makes approximately 150k per year so idk if it'd make a big difference.

It is not a question of choosing to use one form or the other. If JHU requires the CSS Profile, then it does.

It takes several hours to fill out. Even if you had your family’s info, you can’t just dash it out at school. You probably must email back and apologize for not understanding the process, and commit to getting the form back as quickly as possible. Tommorrow maybe, but it may take longer.

Schools that require CSS and FAFSA use CSS for determining institutional aid and FAFSA for federal aid. With an income of $150k you will not qualify for any federal aid other than loans.

The FAFSA and the CSS Profile are two different forms to determine eligibility for financial aid. I think they both return an EFC, (expected family contribution). Some families find that the EFC they return is approximately the same, some families find that it is different.

Many schools require the CSS Profile. What was the EFC returned from your FAFSA? I ask because your family makes a good income, I’m not sure if you will be eligible for financial aid from JHU. The EFC returned from you FAFSA might be similar to the EFC returned from the CSS Profile.

If you filled out the FAFSA then you must have the financial information you need for the CSS Profile. Even so you won’t get it finished in a couple of hours, it’s hard to fill out. Call or email the senior associate director, tell him you can’t get it in this morning. If you have the information you need then get it in as soon as you can.

Then call your parents and tell them you have a family crisis that will require everyone’s efforts tonight. For the PROFILE, you have to project future year’s income. I also think it has to be submitted under the parents’ signature that it is all correct, complete, factual.

I’m guessing the OP has not done FAFSA yet as it is not available until January 1st. But with a $150k income the only federal aid he/she will be eligible for loans. It is a high income for institutional aid at any except the most generous schools. I know some of the Ivies will still give aid to high income families but I don’t know about John Hopkins.
