My father will be getting surgery due to a work related injury this summer-fall. He is expected to be out of work for at least 6 months, and while he will still get paid he will get paid on a less frequent basis. He also is the only form of income for my family. Would I have to file a appeal for the 2014-2015 year (since it will happen in 2014, and the financial information is from 2013.) If I can file this appeal, would my situation be acceptable? I really appreciate the help!

The frequency of your dad’s pay won’t matter if the amount he is getting paid is the same.

It depends on your current EFC. If your current EFC is 0, it won’t make a difference. If the income for the 6 months of full income + the income for the 6 months off work will be the same, it won’t make a difference. If the income for the 6 months of full income + the 6 months off work will be less but not low enough to allow you to qualify for any additional aid, it won’t make a difference. If the income for the 6 months of full income + the 6 months off work is enough less that it makes you eligible for additional aid, then it makes a difference. The only way to know for sure is to talk to your school about a special circumstances review based on loss of income.

And to add to Kelsmom’s list…if your college doesn’t guarantee to meet full need, it might not matter at all. In other words, a reduction in income won’t necessarily mean an increase in aid at schools that do NOT meet full need.

The colleges won’t do anything about this situation until it happens. You can contact the school, and find out their procedure for a special circumstances consideration. They will tell you what you need. In most cases, you will need documentation of the reduction in income at least. Keep in mind that some schools do NOT consider job layoffs until a certain amount of time has lapsed. We had a job loss situation and our kid’s school didn’t even look at these issues until 90 days of unemployment had happened.

The school WILL count things like sick day compensation, and short or long term disability insurance payments if your dad receives those.

Thanks for the quick responses. Kelsmom, I’ll contact the college Monday and ask them about this, and their procedure for this. Thanks for your help.

You should talk to the FA office of the school regarding this situation. It is not an appeal. You are asking for additional help.

It is an appeal. The OP is asking to have a review of the financial situation in light of a change in earnings.

It * is* an appeal. The usual terms schools use is a professional judgement appeal or a circumstances appeal.

Workmans Comp should be used to make sure his income is the same.
