So I have a bit of an odd situation.
I got married in may of this year 2017, my husband was divorced when we got married. How in the heck do I answer the tax questions on the fasfa forms because his taxes includes his ex wife’s income. Im super confused on how to approach it and those ive asked pretty much have no clue how to handle it.
This may be a case where you need to contact the colleges and ask how they want you to proceed. Speak to someone in authority. That’s not usually the person who answers the phone. You’re aiming for an authoritative answer from each, how they want you to break this out. Keep notes for each.
You fill out the fafsa with your income (parent 1) and your new husband’s (parent 2). You won’t be able to get his income off the joint tax return but will have to use W2’s or other tax forms to include just his income, not his ex-wife’s. You will not be able to use the IRS data retrieval tool to verify his income
It’s a little more complicated, but not something they haven’t seen before.
