FASFA question

i was just wondering when is the best time to get a pin for FAFSA and fill out a FAFSA if i am going to college for 2008-2009

I believe you can request a PIN now. Remember that both the student and ONE parent need PIN numbers. Put them in a safe place as you will use them again and again to access the federal finaid things over the time you are in college.

FAFSA will become available on January 1. You can get your PIN ahead of time.

so i have to get 2 pins? or just 1 pin and share it with one parent. after getting the pin i shouldn't fill one out? is that for the wrong school year?

You get a PIN and one parent gets a different PIN. The FAFSA for 2008-2009 will be up on January 1. The one that's there now is for 2007-2008.

why does the parent get another one can't i just share my pin with either my mom or dad. i've only got one right now would i have to apply for another one

Your PIN is your electronic signature. You have one and your parent has ANOTHER one. It doesn't matter if you don't want to, or if you don't understand. Those are the rules.

If your parent doesn't want to get a PIN, you can have FAFSA process your application, send it to you by mail, your parent signs it and sends it back. But that will delay your application.

ya i don't care if my parents get one i am just making sure. i get it now thanks

You or your parent can request a PIN at pin.ed.gov.

Last year we had several parents who didn't get PINs, and the online FAFSA was still pretty straightforward. You can fill out and file the FAFSA online, then at the end you print a signature page for the parent and mail that in within a day or two of your electronic filing.

If you want to get started early, you can go to fafsa4caster.org

Just be prepared, if your parents send in a paper signature page, for your FAFSA processing to be delayed. It is much quicker to have them get a PIN number than it is to use a paper signature. Also, if you send in a paper signature page, you may end up without a completed FAFSA by the school deadline date or end up missing out on some aid.

It really isn't difficult for a parent to receive a PIN number and it saves a TON of hassles and potential missed money.

NikkiiL, Is the same parent PIN used when child #1 is finished, and you are signing for the fafsa for child #2, or #3?

I applied for Financial Aid, I had to go independent for alot of reason. Anyways I did not quailfy and I had to take out a loan which they dropped from the original ammount. Now I dont know what to do for next year, I just started in August, they stated i made too much but i only work part-time making 9 dollars an hour for 25 hours per week. I know people who work full-time making more than me and are using there parents income getting aid..

The parent can use the same PIN for all kids. And the student uses the same PIN for all subsequent years.

NevaehHeaven, open a new thread for your questions. You'll get more answers.

Parents use the same PIN for all students enrolled in college. Each student gets their own PIN. I would suggest that you get it now. If you wait until Jan 1, the processing time is a bit longer due to a LOT of people applying at the same time.

chedva and thumper, thanks.
