Fashion advice in southern states

We are traveling to Alabama/Georgia/Texas the last week of March. Is it okay to wear white capris or skirt? I feel like those items are things I would wear in the summer in MN, but not in the cooler weather months. We are going on a couple college visits.

It’s fine  Everybody will be in Easter colors by then, and flowering trees will be in bloom!

I would say…wear whatever color your choose. I personally would not choose white because what if you spill something on the white skirt or capris? Really is going to show the stain.

Is this a vacation or a college trip?

Thank you @collegemom3717

@thumper1 It is college visit combined with vacation. I know it shouldn’t be a big deal at college visit, but I don’t want to look odd. Outfits I am considering-denim skirt/knit top, tshirt dress/jean jacket, knit or polo top/white capris or skort. I guess I could go with some kind of blue denim capris as well, but I like the white. I’m also trying to coordinate so that I only need to bring the one comfy pair of boat shoes that will matach all outfits as well. I’ve read that it doesn’t really matter what I wear, but I want to feel like I look decent without overdressing. Thank you for posting and for any other thoughts you have on southern fashion

If you are the student, I would omit capris. Wear a pair of nicer jeans for your college visits, with a nice top. Comfy shoes are a big plus especially if you are going on campus tours.

My kid lives in the south. She says no capris. A skirt or pants will be fine.

If you want to wear white, that is fine…but like i said…how do you plan to keep them clean?

bring allergy meds.

@thumper1 I am parent…thank you for the advice. Are capris out of style? I find them cool, but more dressed up than shorts since I am parent. I have a light skirt that could work and will skip the capris.

@sdl0625 Thanks for the tip-something I hadn’t considered, but my husband has seasonal allergies!

I’m in Texas and I wear cropped pants all the time. I think it’s a great choice! I personally wouldn’t bring white to travel in, but perhaps you are braver and neater than I.

@murray93 thank you! I was wondering if I was out of touch with fashion and capri/cropped pants were not a thing anymore. So white in March in TX okay?

Cropped pants are different than capris.

Cropped pants come down to just about your ankles. They are very “in”.

Capris come between your knees and ankles…and where I am, not so fashionable.

But you know what? It really doesn’t matter. You need to wear what is comfortable for you! If you like capris and feel comfortable in them, then wear capris. Really, it’s not a wedding or anything, and no one is going to take your picture or care what you wear as long as you are clean and tidy. And you need to be comfy for you.

Re:color…wear whatever you like. Again…this is your choice. But it does sound like you will be traveling for a couple of days…so maybe white isn’t the best choice.

But again…if you want to wear white capris…wear white capris. Be comfortable and happy with your choice.

March weather in the South is especially unpredictable - it’s possible you would be cold in capris or a skirt! Be sure to bring a pair of pants/jeans and a light jacket or sweater.

As long as you aren’t wearing something low-cut or micro-mini, no one notices what moms on a college tour are wearing. Unless you ask an embarrassing question!

I didn’t know therer were rules about seasons and clothes colors or types anymore- thought that went out decades ago. Who cares??? Wear what you feel good in. Fashion is decreed by the wearer.

I agree on white being prone to stains and dirt showing. Also a harsh color. Visiting colleges and vacationing are both non-high style events. Be comfortable.

The tree pollens are already flying here in Tampa and possibly further north.

Your question brought back a funny memory. Touring schools with S18, we were in the South when our group of parents and students got caught in an unexpected torrential downpour when we were between buildings. Everybody ran like crazy but all of those poor mothers and daughters in white shirts, shorts and carpris were suddenly more exposed than they wanted to be! We all took turns in the one bathroom wringing ourselves out with cheap paper towels. Was definitely a tour we didn’t forget and we still laugh about it.

@VaNcBorder Ha! Thanks for sharing that story! @yauponredux i will watch weather report predictions leading up to our trip and ring some options for cool weather as well.
Thank you everyone. If anyone wants to add some thoughts on appropriate college tour attire in the south, I’d appreciate the ideas.

Comfy shoes, an umbrella, and don’t wear a rival’s school swag ; )

Honestly, no one cares what a parent is wearing. Be comfortable!

We toured a whole bunch of colleges in the southeast. As a parent…I wore nice jeans, a decent looking shirt, and sneakers. Because we did a LOT of walking. A lot.

The most important thing when trying to fit in is to not wear the rival college’s colors. Don’t wear orange to UGA or Bama, Red and Black to GT, etc.

Expect to be hot and sweaty. Southerners might think it is chilly in Tx in late March but I doubt you will. I cannot see why anyone would care. I would bring shorts and keens and a hat and an umbrella. I think it was near 80 yesterday in Houston. I would not wear white pants on a college tour. Are you expecting some kind of excess of formality?

I live in Austin, TX which is generally less formal than other cities in the south. There are plenty of shorts and oversized t-shirts and sweatshirts on the U Texas campus. When I first moved here I was surprised to see people in jeans in what felt like shorts weather to me.

I’m sure that capris or a skirt is fine as long as you have comfortable shoes. March in Austin might be cool or warm, you never know. So, you might need long pants and a jacket. Think like September in MN.
