Please give any opinions, constructive criticism, and editing advice you may have. This is my first draft and I really want to make it excellent because I will be applying this fall to hopefully be accepted into the fall of 2016, as this is my #1 school. Thank you.
My essay:
For a long time, I have had an unconscious love affair with fashion. I haven’t always been aware that I wanted to work in the industry for the rest of my life and I don’t exactly have a story of how I’ve always felt I was born to become a fashion guru. However, whilst growing up, my passion for style was growing magnanimously. By the time I was 15, people would constantly be asking me for advice and tips on how to style and assemble different outfits. The way this small accolade made me feel like I was creditable and certified enough to offer my assistance, was and still is, indescribable. Now, my mother and sister will hardly ever go on a shopping trip without bringing me along. I do not say this to brag about my fashion sense but rather to note that my family and friends don’t just ask for my advice because I have good taste in apparel but also because I truly love and enjoy talking about trends and helping people successfully create their personal style and edge. Over time my casual senses and ability to effortlessly work with fashion has turned into a full blown passion. The way I see fashion is the same way I see a canvas splashed with beautiful colors and pictures, or the way I see a sculpture that embodies the strongest emotions and inspirations. To me, fashion is an art form. We, as people are able to express feelings, ideas, and even tell stories with the items we adorn our bodies with. Unlike many others, I have a respect for even the most outrageous statement pieces. Of course, there are ensembles that I would not wear myself, but I do see their beauty when others are able to personify their feelings and make declarations of style with such exquisite confidence. The uniqueness and individuality that can be fulfilled through fashion is limitless. No one style is more appealing than another, but instead each provides a hint to understanding a person’s thoughts and personality. Now, I delight myself in endless talks over the cover and issues of vogue and the comparisons of stitch work and quality fabrics. I find myself creating inspiration look-books filled with different fabric swatches, buttons, zippers, appliques and themed photographs. There is no arguing, I am undeniably obsessed with fashion. I am inspired by the way a woman can walk into a room and turn fifty heads because of the gown she is wearing, how one pair of shoes can fill someone’s confidence level to its max, and how one unconventional outfit can be placed across 15 tabloids in a week.
It excites me to think about exchanging my ideas and passions with students just as motivated as I and being eager to learn and immerse myself in the studies of fashion. I aspire to exchange my dreams for goals at the Fashion Institute of Technology. If I am accepted, I will immerse myself in a mutually beneficial relationship with the school. FIT will provide me with an outstanding education to further my passions and abilities and put me on a path to a righteous career. FIT will assist me in acquiring exceptional experiences and opportunities in the fashion world and will help me grow as an individual and a successful adult. In return, I plan to make the Fashion Institute of Technology not only my school, but my home for the next four years, and contribute my success to the school and swear to be a factor in maintaining FIT’s exceptional reputation. I am set on majoring in Fashion Merchandising Management because I feel that my goals of becoming a fashion buyer would be most greatly achieved with an FMM degree. I am excited to learn about the business practices of fashion and learn the connections between fashion trends, retail stores, and consumers. By creating my online shop of merchandise located on EBay, I have learned how to market and display merchandise in an alluring way and have mastered some fundamentals of money and sales management. By creating my own YouTube channel I have learned a great deal and have thoroughly enjoyed the idea of broadcasting. Among my involvements, I feel I have taken minor but necessary steps to prepare myself and I am completely confident that I will be able to succeed as a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
