Fashion Institute of Technology?

I'm a junior in high school and I'm VERY interested in FIT. Im passionate about photography and fashion. I have a 3.0 gpa and I think a portfolio that I'm finishing up soon. Is it hard to get in there??

You will need good grades and a strong portfolio to get into FIT. It is very competitive due to the incredible in-state tuition, strength of its programs and faculty, location and network. Definitely plan to attend the open house event in the fall (register early as sears are limited). Also attend a National Portfolio Day event and visit the FIT table for a critique. Are you a junior now, or going into your junior year? Good luck!

I get mostly c’s and b’s and some a’s, pretty average in the grades department. My portfolio is growing and I am confident in it. I’m definitely going to check out the open house and the National Portfolio Day! And yes, I’m a junior and soon to be senior. Thanks!

As far as your portfolio, our experience this year was that it was never complete! My dd kept working on it and changing it as her senior year went on. Her work continued to grow and for each application/portfolio she sent in, it was only finished because she sent it in! Good luck to you. Just in case, have you found other schools that interest you? It might be a good idea, as it is never smart to put all of your eggs in one basket. Good luck to you!

I like your work! The subjects and the lighting are lovely. However, I am no expert in photography but I did send a link to my niece who is studying photography and is also interested in fashion work. If she has any tips I’ll pass them along to you! Regarding grades, your gpa is important, so luckily you have the remainder of this year and the fall semester to turn those C’s into A’s and B’s! One of my friends is a professor at FIT and also has served on the admissions committee there. She has seen kids get turned away, even with awesome portfolios, because their grades were lacking (and vice versa). You need strong grades and a strong portfolio to get into FIT. I would imagine it has become more difficult with the downturn in the economy. As phillyartmom said, consider other programs as well, and also if you don’t get in due to grades, try community college, get your general ed requirements out of the way, and re-apply! If you qualify for in-state tuition at FIT it is the deal of the century, so I hope you do get in! Definitely attend the fall open house; my friend said it is very important to go (Plus, having attended with my daughter I can tell you it’s a very informative day and the faculty and students we met were so talented and friendly). Watch the FIT website for it; a few years ago it was in early November but you must register early to get a seat!

dcoons4, I heard back from my niece: “She has potential, the studio like ones are pretty good. But if she wants to get into FIT she realllly needs to add a lot more to her portfolio. Different models, and shoots. But not so many pictures that they can’t skim through all of them…” (your portfolio submissions will be limited by each college and they will tell you how many to submit). So, shoot animals, buildings, play with lighting, etc. You are definitely on the right track! And I should add that your grades are good now, just keep it going and if you can get your gpa up a little it won’t hurt! I think your chances are very good and you still have many months before your application is due. Keep us posted! I enjoyed looking at your photos and I think your work shows promise. good luck!
