im planning my college visit trip, and after a few schools around NY i wanted to stop by CMU. is there a fast (and cheap) way to get from new york city to pittsburg? NOT by renting a car?

If you can get to Newark Airport there are some $49 flights. The bus from Pittsburgh airport goes directly to CMU for about $2.00. There are also buses from NYC, but it takes a long time to get there...

$49 flights??? that's pretty cheap. But yea, flying is probably the quickest way. I wouldn't recommend going by bus.

It's an all day drive to Pittsburgh from the NYC area (at least six hours). Our son flies in, there are lots of flights at every price point, but the lowest I've ever seen is $150 from LaGuardia. (We'd have to save A LOT of money to be willing to drive to Newark.) My son takes the bus to CMU, it's very simple and much cheaper than a taxi which as I recall is over $40. The bus is the 28X Airport Flyer.

I believe The Pennsylvanian runs from NYC all the way out to Chicago via Pittsburgh, though it costs more than flying and takes longer.

I wish Southwest was flying that route when I was going there. :(

Also, during the school year, one of the fraternities organizes a program called the "Magic Bus" which runs right during fall/spring break and will take you from CMU's campus to a handful of drop-off points east of Pittsburgh. The one I used to take would go to Harrisburg, King of Prussia, and Trenton. I know there's another that also goes to NYC and a few other PA locations.

thanks for the replies!
