Fatal Off-Campus House Fire--Marist College

Oh my goodness. It’s too terrible for words. Thank God for those who survived. I read/watched the video article above, and I feel so relieved for the father whose daughter decided not to stay at the house last night.
Way back in the late 70’s, I was a new roommate to two girls who had been through a dorm fire at GWU the year before. They were so traumatized that they slept in their street clothes for months into the term.
The survivors of this fire are going to go through a very difficult period.

There was an apartment fire in Allston yesterday. 7 Boston University students survived by jumping out of windows including those on the second floor. I believe that one is in critical condition. Son’s school had an apartment fire too in November or December but everyone managed to get out. These didn’t turn into tragedies but I’m sure that they are traumatic for students and their families.

I have always had a “thing” about fire, stemming from something in my childhood. DS1 has rented several apartments in Boston and I always ask about fire escapes, smoke alarms, etc. He is a new apt. now that I haven’t seen and I need to ask him about it…

Have they been able to establish the cause of the fire?

The only thing that I’ve heard is that the house was one of those Sear’s houses from years ago. Supposedly, they used wider planks when making them (prefab kits) and once put together, there is a lot of space filled with air between the walls which cause fires to spread quickly.
