I got into schools such as UCLA, UC-Berkeley, USC, Notre Dame, and NYU Stern. However, my dad has always been a fan of Stern and when I got accepted, he immediately told me I would be attending there. Although I understand his reasoning as going to Stern will be tremendously beneficial to my future by getting a job on Wall Street, I am completely turned down by the non-existent traditional campus experience, and horrendous sports teams. I am not even a big fan of the City, too.
What can I do to help convince my dad of letting me attend my top choices of USC, UCLA, and ND?
I am doing business and have told my father that going to USC's and ND's business schools are comparable to Stern, but he is still headstrong that Stern is matchless.
Do you want to work on Wall Street? Stern is a Street target. Haas is a target for west coast banking.
The rest really aren’t Street targets (more semi-targets) though ND places well in Chicago and I think USC & UCLA do pretty well on the West Coast.
If you don’t care about Wall Street, tell him to stop living his life through you and that you’re interested in something else. You can get a job from any of those places. ND and USC have a reputation for much stronger alumni bases than the rest of your schools (though Stern shouldn’t be shabby).
@PurpleTitan I do not care where I work whether its in Chicago, Wall Street, or in Cali. However, working in Texas does appeal to me definitely (I got rejected from UT-Austin ).
I will most likely not do finance as I am currently more interested in consulting. Which is another reason why I feel like NYU won’t be the best fit again as it is mostly known for finance.
However, in the long run, I feel like a degree from USC Marshall will not fair well against those from Stern or Mendoza, so there is a huge dilemma I am going through right now. (I am forever grateful for these acceptances of course).
I agree, it looks like Mendoza would give you everything NYU does with a traditional campus experience to boot. Mendoza is ranked ahead of NYU in some polls if your dad is into that kind of stuff. And it has a huge alumni network in major cities (NY and Chicago for sure). People tend to do their best in an environment where they are happy. My S didn’t apply to NYU after visiting (great school, just not the undergrad experience he wanted). I think you have to have a heart-to-heart with your dad.
