My cousin was recently denied from UF and has been left with having to decide between attending FAU or enrolling in Santa Fe. His goal is to transfer to UF once he received his AA and won't even consider spending all years at FAU. I'm wondering what you guys felt about which course of action would be best.

As far as his academic background, he slacked off in his freshman and sophomore years. However, it just clicked for him before junior year and he proceeded to obtain a 4.0 GPA his final two years (up almost 2 points from his first 2 years). I expect him to maintain a minimum of a 3.5 for his first two years in college. (I'm mentioning all of this because it probably has some bearing on which route would be the best fit.

Thank you in advance for your help with this. I wouldn't want to steer him the wrong way.

Sorry to hear that, man. :[ If you guys are tight, it would be cool to have him near campus if he goes to Santa Fe. Assuming he's really determined and works hard to get up to UF's transfer standards, then it shouldn't make too big of a difference where he enrolls for those first couple years.

I hear the Santa Fe kids get to participate in some UF clubs, get discounts for buses around town, can still go to games, etc. Might be the more enjoyable experience.

That was my original opinion and I expressed it to him when he told me about the rejection. However, I realized how little I knew about FAU and how it would compare to Santa Fe besides the most basic differences. I'm hoping my CC friends can help me help him.

Right now, due to budget constraints, it is very difficult to transfer from anything other than a community college. He may have trouble if he attends FAU because UF and FSU are giving priority to community college students who have AA's. As a matter of fact, UF and FSU had a note on their transfer page last year that stated they were ONLY taking apps from community college transfers.

And also remember that transferring with an AA to UF is not a given either. I know several students who went the Santa Fe route because they didn't get into UF as freshmen and just found out they didn't get into UF with their AA. They are now trying to figure out what to do. I know that most of the 4 year schools have dramatically cut back on transfers in general. I know this isn't a popular opinion, but given the state's budget situation, I would encourage anyone who wants a 4 year degree to find a 4 year state university where they can be happy. Unless there is a dramatic turnaround in the budget, it's only going to get worse and they may cut back on admissions even more. These are very unsettling times we live in and the state universities have always been stretched. This next year is going to be worse than ever.

I say go to Santa Fe, students can participate in programs/organizations at UF, yes there are discounts..and probably more I don't know about. Yes it is hard for transfer as well, that is why you talk with UF counselors as you are enrolled your two years at Santa Fe. So they can give you the right direction to make that admission possible-even if you have met the requirements. Plus you can enroll in UF classes online junior and senior year if he didn't mind doing that at Santa Fe. good luck

oh, it is harder sometimes for students who are trying to transfer from another university. One person who works at a comm college, said that they are actually stopping this, that many students hop to differ. universities, so they say where you start at-is where you will finish at. which in a way is terrible but at the same time it helps comm college and ftic freshman get a opportunity to get into UF.

Here what I did to transfer to UF as a junior: this is the best article you’ll read to help you
Went to PBCC for 2 years, I have been told Universities like seeing CC transfers aside from the articulation agreement they have (which is not important right now)
At PBCC received 3.5 and joined the honor society (Phi Theta Kappa)…colleges love this–> deans’ list(3.5), presidents list(3.8), etc
Became Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa which really made me stand out, if your efficient it’s not too time consuming
Stay on track with the pre prof courses you would have been taking at UF for your major and make sure you get the GPA for those courses that the department at UF demands
Do something notable that you can talk about in your essays, scholarships, etc.
P.S. This was a one time blog and will probably never look at this again…sorry if i dont answer any questions. Good luck!
