FAU Social Scene

What can I say, I’m a big fan of the party scene. I’d like to know about Greek life at fau, if any have houses? If id need to bring a car in order to rush. Also what is the party like down there?

Unfortunately, the social scene at FAU is virtually non-existent for a number of reasons.

Upwards to 95% of the FAU student body commutes to school from off-campus. The remaining 5% or so of the student body who lives on campus mostly comes from Broward County or other parts of Palm Beach County, so many of those students return home for the weekends since home is so close by. The prevailing mentality of many FAU student living on campus is, “Why stay on campus over the weekend when no one is going to be around and home is so close by? I might as well be bored at home than bored AND lonely at school.”

A handful of FAU students who live on campus travel to other state universities–namely UCF, UF, and FSU–on the weekends to party with friends from high school and/or siblings. This is more common when there’s a big football game or some other popular event going on at or around one of those schools.

Needless to say, FAU’s main campus at Boca Raton turns into a ghost town come Thursday night. And if you think that FAU is a big party school, then you’re sadly mistaken.

I would also like to add that many students who start out at FAU either end up transferring to a different school or dropping out of school entirely by sophomore or junior year. As we both know, FAU isn’t necessarily a school for scholars, and since its admissions standards are quite low and always have been, it’s no mystery that so many FAU students never complete their bachelor’s degrees. It’s sad, but true. I transferred from FAU to the University of Arizona my junior year because I found very few people at FAU to be on the same wavelength as me (i.e., education/goal/career-oriented). Because FAU’s student population is so transient, it’s hard to establish meaningful, long-lasting friendships.

If you join Greek life, your chances of having a decent social life at FAU will be better, but still Greek life at FAU isn’t anything at all like Greek life at other big-time schools like UF, FSU, or even UCF. Given the sheer size of the student population, Greek turnout at FAU is pretty pathetic. Not long after I transferred to UofA, I heard FAU was planning to construct a Greek village on or near campus, although I don’t really know where they would have the room to build a Greek village, to be honest. Still, going Greek doesn’t change the fact that FAU is a ghost town on weekends, so lots of your fraternity brothers or sorority sisters will still end up going home on weekends.

Oh, yeah–if you live on campus at FAU, make sure you bring your car with you to campus, so you can escape every now and again. FAU is really not the type of campus where you wanna be stuck without a car on weekends–trust me.

Overall, I found FAU to be a very difficult place to navigate socially, and the social scene on campus truly leaves something to be desired.
