Hey! I'm attending the Wilkes Honors College in the fall and I was wondering if someone could give me some insight/information about the social scene at FAU. I am by no means a big partier, but I just wanted an idea of what I'm getting in to :) Are there parties thrown frequently/do Wilkes kids go out/party? Are there lots of clubs on the campus? Also, do Wilkes kids have the liberty to join greek life on the main campus? What do kids on this campus do on the weekends? Sorry for all the questions, just a few things that I was wondering about!

Good question! I was a student at the HC, so hopefully I can give you an idea of what you’ll be getting yourself into.

First, the HC is by no means your “typical” college experience. You will know everyone within your first few weeks (and this can be a good thing!) and there is a big sense of community because you recognize everyone by name and face. In terms of things to do, there are events that occur on campus–usually there is something going on every week. The bigger clubs, such as Program Board and MacRSA, put on events like coffeehouse concerts (they invite some well-known/not-so-well-known artists to perform in the Spring), pajama prom, snow days, bounce house days, dances, 5K races, etc. Then, there are the smaller clubs geared towards specific interests who also put on events. There is always something going on.

There won’t be huge parties on campus (though some students who live off-campus may throw a party every once in a while), but most of your “hanging out” will be done in the dorms watching movies, playing board games, other shenanigans of some sort, and exploring the Jupiter area (the beach is lovely). The Abacoa plaza is a strip mall literally a stone’s throw from campus (you can walk there!) and they have restaurants and bars that students go to as well. Also, downtown West Palm Beach is 20 minutes away and that offers all the nightlife you could ever want

Weekends are fairly quiet, but since you form a pretty tight knit community, you’ll find something to do. Promise! Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m excited for you–you’ll have a great time.

As helloimaleks explained, it’s definitely not a typical college experience because it’s isolated from the main campus. So in a sense it’s a more subdued experience but you do get to know everybody very well, which can be a tremendous advantage.
