Sci-fi:
- Isaak Azimov -- above all, no comments, you MUST read him :)
- Strugatskie A & B -- Russian science fiction/fantasy, one of the best.
- Simak -- I haven't read much of his books but what I read really hit the spot and left some penetrating memories.
- Bester -- Tiger! Tiger! is awesome.
- Lukjanenko -- great Russian author; has a lot of good novels such as "Deeptown."

Fantasy:
- Tolkien -- no comments.
- Asprin -- easy reading; very interesting and realistic universe.

Goethe -- his "Faust" is truly one of the greatest books ever written in this world. Try getting German original or some other translation than English ones.

Bulgakov -- best Russian author; has a lots in common with Goethe in style.

Lermontov -- very interesting style.

^agreed. Her "great" The Fountain head is nowhere as great as people try to make it sound, honestly its an ok read but definitely not the work of genius. I also agree that nthe whole objectivism thing is absolute crap, anyone who buys into that **** is worthy of nothign more than pity.

OK back on topic
favorite writers:
David Sedaris
Dostoeivski
Kesey
Saramago

borges is awesome but in the original spanish....I always try to read every book in its origina language, unless of course I don't know the language, but in any case a lot of the quality of a translated book also depends on the translation. I've read some translated works in English from two different editorials, and one is amazing and the other version sucks balls, so be careful when buying translations.

Stanislaw Lem (absolutely amazing, no words that can describe his works)

Garry Harrison (Bill the Galactic Hero series is hilarious)

Strugatskiy brothers (nice quality science fiction)

Robert Sheckley (same)

Anton Chekhov (funny, but true, a lot of moral issues)

Mikhail Bulgakov (nice works, especially Dog's Heart)

Jules Verne (read some of his books 7-8 times, but always ready to read them again)

Aleksandr Pushkin (his poetry sucks, but the novels are pretty good)

Nikolay Gogol (Taras Bulba is the ultimate guide to Ukrainian Cossacs. I must notice that he's Ukrainian, not Russian)

Taras Shevchenko (the greatest Ukrainian poet ever)

Ivan Franko (right up there with Shevchenko, somewhat nationalist, but hey, he loved his country)

Ivan Kotliarevskiy (witty Ukrainian author)

Ann Coulter (yeah, i'm a conservative)
