Favorite mens black pants - nice but not too nice?

So my son could use a 'midpoint' pair of black slacks for gigs - not suit pants but nicer than black jeans: slim/straight but not too skinny - flat front - washable - something kind of like wrinkle free chinos, or some other 'easy care' casual nice pants with a modern fit. Does anyone have a favorite brand or source? He is 34x34 so no special sizing needed. I thought of this as I was ironing for a gig this evening. It would be nice if we can find something that is pretty easy and sharp looking for when he no longer has his personal valet service. :D

My son really likes the Pac Sun chinos but he doesn’t have them in black so I’m not sure if they make them. His other favorites are Banana Republic and Express.

DS and DH both musicians, have always found Dockers flat fronts good for gigs.
Little ironing if you pull them from dryer quickly!

No personal valet ironing at this house.

Thanks, both, for the tips. I found what looks like a good pair online at The Gap but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I will look at the Dockers.

Land’s End is always good quality. Check Penney’s for sales on Dockers.

I ended up ordering from The Gap since they had a 35% off that expired tonight. I’ll let you know how they are. I would love to find the perfect pant then order several.

saintfan,
I am not sure how old your son is but keep in mind that boys/men do keep growing into their 20s. My boys did not gain anything in height but they did fill out and get wider. My favorite was last summer my son was home and came into the kitchen and accused me of shrinking his button up shirts. I looked over at him and smiled. His shoulders had broadened and he was looking less like a boy and more like a man. He had not gotten fat…just filled out. So you might not want to invest in a huge volume of pants just yet.

Also styles and trends change and if your son is doing Jazz gigs what he wants now might not be what he wants in a year. Last year’s ultra skinny trend might morph into more loose cuts.

My boys like H&M and Uniqlo for trendy clothes.

Ha! true. I wasn’t thinking a Costco pallet but maybe 2 so when one is balled up on the bedroom floor possibly the other is clean ;)

I was thinking of Docker’s or even Haggar flat fronts (from Kohls when they have their sale and you have a 30% off coupon) I buy them for DH because of how easy they are to care for and with sales/coupons I stock up when they end up costing me $25 a pair. Make sure you send him with woolite dark detergent. Helps keep them looking nice.

And turn the pants inside out when laundering. Keeps “stuff” from sticking to the visible surface and prevents lighter lines along the creases where the fabric rubs against itself. Show him how to properly put them on a decent hanger too!

Oh it’s not like he doesn’t KNOW how to properly hang them up. That is one of the side benefits of 3 years of marching band with expensive wool uniforms and very particular ‘band moms’ - he knows how to correctly hang his jacket on a curved hanger as well  Home implementation is the issue. I guess I need to start deducting 10 points for improperly hung suit pants.

UPDATE: The pants arrived a couple days ago . . . Gap Classic Khaki slim fit. The kid finally tried them on and they are excellent! Great fit! Quite slim without being “skinny” or too tight. Very well made. I would recommend them. They are having 40% off right now if anyone else needs some.

Further Update: Experimental alt/rock early set followed by a jazz gig. The Pants, black dress shirt untucked, partly unbuttoned, sleeves rolled up, beanie. Presto change-o . . . still The Pants, button and tuck shirt, add jacket and tie, lose the beanie and ‘voila!’ ready to play on. The Gap Classic Khaki slim fit pants really are nice, but not too nice. :-bd

p.s. I have not checked to see if they made it back on to a hanger or are balled up on the floor.

Old Navy. Great price and I wore them to work at a big 4 accounting firm.

Lol. My son doesn’t hang his clothes up either. I’d like to buy him a pair of wonder black pants that can’t wrinkle when balled up or stain. My son also can’t tell the difference between navy and black. There have been a few concerts he’s worn his navy pants to.lol. He didn’t know when I told him. He also wore white socks too…grr. His picky conductor didn’t care. That was a shocker.

Ha! I have a husband who is bad with socks so I trained Saintkid young. He owns no navy pants which solves that problem. Also if they don’t have the right socks for marching band they aren’t allowed to march and lose 100 pts or have to wear dorky cast off socks from the discard pile so they learn fast.

Lol. I’m obsessed. He has a basket of black socks but somehow couldn’t find black socks. I can’t wait for college. I won’t be able to recue him from his sock mistakes anymore.lol

Ha! Maybe he needs some emergency socks in his instrument case

We have that problem with belts. I went to Ross last week and bought 2 more nice black belts - one for regular use and one in case of emergency.

Omg saintfan for sure. Why don’t they have emergency pockets in these new hard cases? I should sneak a pair in there and his music bag. One morning he woke up his good cello friend neighbor to borrow her rock stop. Lol. I was like give her a juice stop giftcard for her pain and suffering of waking up too early. He said it wasn’t hers.lol. It’s a community rock stop that gets passed around.
