streetlight manifesto

I’m really into the Shins right now. Wincing the Night Away could be my favorite album ever.

The Shins were the first show I saw (hooray for the nothingness that is Albuquerque!), but definitely listen to Chutes Too Narrow more. It’s by far their best.

I also listen to a lot of movie soundtracks especially when I’m studying or at work since it’s easier for me to concentrate when there’s no words in the song. Right now my favorites are Spirited Away, The Village, and Lord of the Rings.

Genres:

 • Alternative rock (NOT generic Nirvana knock-offs like Silverchair and Nickelback)
 • Classical (NOT flute or trumpet concertos, or lied/opera; NOT Mozart or Beethoven, or similar composers, like Haydn/Schubert)
 • Non-Western folk/traditional music (particularly Indonesian gamelan; not vocal music [e.g., Japanese Kabuki/Tibetan chant])
 • Jazz (includes both earlier big bang swing and latter “serious” instrumental jazz; NOT smooth jazz)
 • Metal (NOT just straightforward, by-the-numbers “metal” - has to have a unique edge to it)
 • Pop-punk (presumably for nostalgic reasons; I don’t really like any pop-punk except for what I already liked when I was younger)

Others genres I like, but to a lesser extent, include post-rock, hip hop, film score, pop, and punk. I can’t stand country.
Sixties music (i.e., classic rock) usually bores me. Eighties hair metal makes me nauseous.

Artists:

 • Alternative rock: Ringo Shiina/Tokyo Jihen, The Back Horn, Muse, Deftones, Tool, Alice in Chains, SoaD, Pixies, Foxy Shazam
 • Classical: Hovhaness, Scriabin, Bach, Chopin, Strauss, Ives, Liszt, Saint-Sa

Congolese Rumba, Rap, and Hip Hip
