Hi all, loving the Christmas movie suggestions! What series can we all watch together over break? (All the kids are teens or adults, so really anything goes.) We’ve loved Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Better Call Saul, PEN 15, YOU–need something that will grab our attention and move along! Thank you.
The Middle.
It seems like your boring sitcom at the beginning but then takes many bizarre twists and turns. Very funny. The writers are brilliant.
I’ll also add The IT Crowd
What We Do In The Shadows (if sex and language aren’t offensive to you)
Brooklyn 99
Community
I’ll edit as I remember more…
DH & I just watched True Story on Netflix. Totally caught us off guard with the twists!! We’ll be watching again with D when she gets home in 2 weeks.
We love Dexter (including the new ones on Showtime) and The Chestnut Man on Netflix (in Danish but dubbed in English and you hardly notice the difference).
Also, Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon. Only one season so far but it was a nice change from all the murder/serial killer/thriller stuff we usually gravitate to.
If you enjoyed the range of Modern Family to PEN15 than I would say anything goes for your family in terms of maturity so maybe just check out the Binged TV thread.
Second the True Story rec - limited show on Netflix - drew us right in and no spoilers - don’t read about it !!!
My kids love Psych.
We’ve watched:
Stranger Things
Killing Eve
The Flight Attendant
Atypical
Locked and Key
Sherlock
My daughter and I enjoy watching her childhood books turned into TV shows - Alex Rider, Series of Unfortunate Events, and Mysterious Benedict Society.
We also watch BBC game showst ogether Taskmaster, Would I Lie to You, and Only Connect.
We did Sherlock when it was first released.
What We Do In the Shadows
BlackAdder
BattleStar Gallatica
Firefly
My family all thought Russian Doll was a nearly perfect tv show. We also liked DEVS. For some silly adventure I can say we enjoyed Revolution and Zoo (Billy Burke fans here). My family and I recently did top 20 lists for each of us in a bunch of categories. Here’s my top 20 tv shows:
Doctor Who
The Good Place
Broadchurch
My Brilliant Friend
House
Castle Rock
Lovecraft Country
Law and Order
Good Omens
Servant
Ted Lasso
Last Week Tonight
The Sopranos
Stranger Things
Russian Doll
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
The Simpsons
White Lotus
SYTYCD
My Name is Earl
I am NOT an animated show fan, but Bob’s Burgers brings the whole family joy.
Other shows we have watched and enjoyed en masse:
Manifest
Sherlock
Stranger Things
Alone (reality show)
Chuck
Brooklyn 99
More teen-oriented:
All American
Outer Banks
The Expanse is a new favorite! My teens are oddly drawn to old seasons of shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race. We also watch campy shows like 9-1-1 and Chicago Fire — easy to watch, lots of episodes, and kinda cheesy
.
OH - our family loved amazing race when the kids were all younger! that was fun; we’d sit around and watch it every week.
ok for this list - oldie but goodies: the office, parks and rec, house, as well as many above. i did like the flight attendant! queens gambit was good i thought. I would say NO to Shameless for family watching. (not that they havent heard or seen it all, but it’d just be uncomfortable to watch with my adult kids!)
We love to watch the old first edition of Star Trek…reruns. We actually own some of these on DVD.
I know you are asking about TV shows, but we watched a ton of Mel Brooks movies one year….so much fun.
Son and GF just discovered Seinfeld, and we binged with them over Thanksgiving. They are fascinated by a show that is totally face-to-face communication, no computers or cell phones. They laugh out loud anytime one of the characters picks up a corded phone or uses a pay phone which they’ve never used (seen?) in their lives. We really enjoyed seeing some of those episodes again. I recommended they try Frasier next.
my DH is redisccovering Seinfield too! He’s laughing and laughing! good suggestion!
Schitt’s Creek!
We love watching Survivor as a family, and I would also say Friday Night Lights would be a group favorite in this house. I think we’ve watched the entire series 3 times together .
We like to watch comedies together. Love Bob’s Burgers. Derry Girls is a perfect show we’ve watched multiple times. We like Kim’s Convenience and Ted Lasso. We also like Great British Baking Show and Somebody Feed Phil.
My family will watch these series many times over!
Ted Lasso (Apple+)
Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)
Schitt’s Creek (Netflix; really picks up after first 2-3 episodes)
