I'm coming down from Chicago this fall and beside the school tour what places should I check out on campus or in Austin?

6th street and couple lakes

Eat breakfast at Magnolia Cafe South. It’s amazing.

Mt. Bonnell at sunset (it’s a scenic view of both the Austin skyline and the Colorado river).

South Congress - go to Homeslice, Lucy in Disguise, and there’s vintage shops.

Visit the Captiol and all that jazz too.

Swim at Barton Springs.

Walk, run, and/or bike on the Hike and Bike Trail along Lady Bird Lake.

Drive around Westlake Hills, so you can laugh when your friends say that Texas is flat. You can also take a day trip into the Hill Country for the same reason. The best time of year for that trip is when the bluebonnets are in bloom (March or April - it varies each year).

Eat dinner at the Oasis Restaurant, high on the cliffs above Lake Travis. Time it so you’re there at sunset. A bell is rung and everybody claps.

Go to a high school football game on a Friday night - Austin High School is not far from campus. You won’t believe it!

I grew up in Austin and miss it! If they could just lower the temperature in the summer by 20 degrees or so, I would move back in a heartbeat.

Have fun - Austin is a wonderful place to live. And UT is the best!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I can’t wait to visit UT, hook em horns!

Amen about the heat. Beaumont’s worse, though, due to the heat index. Austin is truly a beautiful city.

Where do college parties take place? I’m very curious!

join a fraternity, dhs

Let me make this one easy on you…

August 27, 2011–Lake Travis HS vs. Westlake HS @ Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium 7:30

The number of people there will blow your mind. This is HIGH SCHOOL!

I wish I could go to that game! My sister and I went to Westlake, and her son goes to Austin High. Just today, she said he came in wearing a “BEAT WESTLAKE!” t-shirt. I didn’t realize the significance of his fashion statement.
