Favorite SAT and ACT prep books?

Thanks! My husband ordered one today, and I said, “Oh no! I have to check with Colllege Confidential first” LOL

Hi Citymama!

I tutor for both tests, but only verbal sections, as well as ACT Science. First, I believe the official test prep books for both are necessary. People seem to think they are just for official practice tests, but there is a lot of useful info as well. It’s always best to be able to mark up these books, which can’t be done online.

For ACT science, you can’t beat the book “For the Love of ACT Science.” This, IMO, is the single best prep book. Prep Scholar blog has useful info for science.

The feedback on the newest official ACT prep book is that with only three parctice tests, it isn’t substantial enough. But it covers the new format of the essay and has other useful info. The Ultimate Guide to ACT Math is recommended. Barron’s and Peterson’s also get high marks. Be sure to always get the most recent editions. Kaplan is the official test prep company of the ACT, and there are some very good, concise tips on their site.

Prep guides for the SAT are tricky right now, because most were published before the new test actually came out, using insider info. That said, I think Kaplan’s new SAT book is good for the student who just wants a respectable score. Barron’s SAT guide has good reviews. I would search for the most recent ones that have many positive reviews. TBH, Khan Academy and prepscholar blog are both very good for strategies.

Prep scholar, Spark Notes, and Prep factory are all good online resources for both tests. Good luck!

@Lindagaf Thank you so, so much!!! This is the kind of info we need! What do you think of Erica Metzler books? I saw something on here about her ACT English book. Thanks again:))

Ps- I just copied and pasted your response and sent to my husband before he spends anymore money ordering books!

Yes, those are supposed to be good too. But I am not sure they are updated for the new SAT.
