Favorite study spaces?

What are your favorite places to study near Brown? In addition to your room/libraries (which one specifically?), what other places-- both on campus and off – do you go to do your best studying?

I don’t really have the attention span to study with more than a few others present or with much noise, so I stick to my room almost exclusively. I’ve tried the Ivy Room, but it’s way too loud.

on weekends, the watson institute conference rooms are empty and have great light from the glass walls

hay reading room is beautiful

hillel house also has a bunch of cool spaces to work in

There are some great secret study spots besides your room and the libraries. Mine last year was Pembroke Hall, right near Andrews. The upper seminar rooms of JWW (J Walter Wilson, where you get your mail) are also great as long as you can nab one.

I second dcircle’s nomination of the Watson institute conference rooms / library – they’re great.

I’ve spent many a late night working in the lovely glass-enclosed atrium of the Life Sciences building.

Are most of these open late-night?

I would reckon most of them are not, unless of course you have card access. Though if you stay in the building continuously from when it was still open no one’s going to chase you out. Or if there is already someone in there you could wave at them to let you in.

Ah, that’s good to know. Thanks. I’m not yet at Brown so I don’t really know but, are we allowed access to all of the buildings on campus (for the purpose of studying)? For some reason I feel like for places like Pembrooke Hall and the Watson Institute Conference rooms serve a greater purpose/ aren’t exactly open to us (even when they’re not in use).

You would need to have a specific reason to have card access to an academic building, for example, working in a lab in the building. But even if you don’t have access, I doubt you would be chased out if you stayed beyond normal hours.

Oh but everyone has access during normal hours?

^^They’re starting to chase off those on the upper floors of the CIT who shouldn’t be there after 5, so they may do so in other places too.

I haven’t been chased out of anywhere after hours. If you’re a late-night studier, the libraries are never too full then.
