I'm thinking about getting some gift certificates for Xmas for son who lives in South Campus. The problem is that I have no idea what the favorite take-out restaurants are. Any suggestions? What about nearby stores? The only one I saw is the coffee shop/convenience store right in the basement, but I don't remember its name. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Barnes and Noble in the campus bookstore, Giordanos Pizza local one- but D is in a north dorm

Take-out restaurants? (Take-out restaurants with GIFT CERTIFICATES?) Nearby stores? South Campus? Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-[cackle].

There is this: http://backstorycafe.com/home.html

^^^We had to send food by mail…

Ain’t nothing anywehre near there. My son lived in SouthCampus last year and he resorted to going to restaurants he frequented the year before when he lived at the Shoreland.

This doesn’t sound too promising, but thanks for your answers. Any restaurants that deliver? Do any of you remember the name of the coffee shop/convenience store in the basement of South?

It’s called Midway Market, and I guarantee that it doesn’t have gift cards.

And yeah, Hyde Park doesn’t have many chain restaurants.

Like everyone else said, there really isn’t much in the way of chain stores/restaurants. The campus bookstore has a Starbucks, but IIRC that doesn’t take gift cards? There’s a CVS and a couple other places elsewhere in Hyde Park that probably do, but those are north of campus, although they’re easily accessible by bus. I would just get him a Visa cash card or something.

There are various restaurants that deliver. The only chains that I can think of though are Dominoes/Pizza Hut :-/

If you are going to be in Chicago or can have someone send you something…there is Giordano’s (pizza), Edwardo’s (pizza), The Medici (burgers/pizza), Salonica’s, Cedars, Park 52. None of these are necessarily close to South Campus though (about 1/2 miles).

PS: Are you really a parent? Your post history seems to indicate otherwise.

me? no. Student (2nd year) I’m sorry if I alluded otherwise.

Oh, and the 1/2 miles=1 or 2 miles not 1/2 mile.

Thanks -CS. I’m going to call a few of the restaurants you suggested and see if they deliver and have gift cards. If that doesn’t work, I’ll give up on this idea. I hope some new businesses open close to South.

haavain – I’m a parent using the shared kitchen laptop.

Students who live in South or BJ usually just get delivery or take-out from the restaurants further north and east. Also, there are plenty of CTA buses and university shuttles that make going to those restaurants fairly simple. So pretty much any restaurant in the area bounded by 63rd, 51st, Cottage Grove, and the lake would be a good bet.
