I'm a little stuck on which to get, so I was hoping someone with either could help me figure out which one would fit my wants.
My wants are pretty basic:
-needs to stay fluffy through the night, and hopefully through each sheet washing (2 weeks)
-needs to last at least 2 years (I'll be off-grounds at UVA for two more years with a full bed)
-I'd like it to be able to breath and not roast me at night

The first ans last "wants" are my main issue on which to get. I've heard that fiberbeds stay fluffier, but that featherbeds keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. So, as you can see, I'm stuck. Any tips, personal preferences? I'll probably just buy the bed eventually from Domestications or BB&B unless someone has a better suggestion. Thanks!

Shoebox - never had a featherbed, but we have a fiberbed in the deep. deep South and it is not hot - that was a concern that I had before I bought it. Now I do contain the fiberbed with a mattress cover in the summer particularly - it is not quite as fluffy that way, but much softer than without, and not particularly hot.
Ours has lasted a little over three years, and I turn and flip it periodically - but not every time I wash the sheets because it is under a mattress cover most of the year.

D’s had the fiberbed covered by a nice mattress pad then the fitted sheet for 2 years and counting and LOVES it!

Fiberbed has stayed nice and fluffy, hasn’t needing washing - I stick it in the dryer with a couple of Downy sheets when it comes to my house to freshen it up.

I actually had a fiberbed last year in on-grounds apartments, so A/C was free so I often kept my room cold at night. With an apt this year in which we pay for electricity, I’m trying to find something temperature friendly. I thought featherbeds would be the best option, but I’ve heard that they get lumpy easily, and I liked the loft of my fiberbed last year. If the general consensus is that they don’t get terribly hot, I guess I’ll go with the fiberbed again.

We’re going to try a combination of eggcrate mattress (had an old hand me down in the attic) with a feather mattress topper on top of it for the “coolness” factor. S can’t stand to be hot when sleeping. Hoping the eggcrate will help mitigate any lumpiness from the feather topper and the feather topper will block the heat factor of the foam eggcrate. If it doesn’t work out for him, he can dump it all or just use one or the other.

We got the fiberbed - they seem to offer more support and don’t squash down as much (that’s what the BB and B salesman said, too). S has had his for two years and says it was always the most comfortable bed on the floor/house. He says he’s never had an issue with it getting too hot.

D1 has had featherbed for two years. Loves it and has had no problems. It is still fluffy! I throw it in the dryer once a year with a few tennis balls and then back to school it goes! She does cover it with a mattress pad.

No roommate to worry about, I’m in an apartment off-grounds. I think I’m just going to try to go by BB&B and feel each type and go from there. It seems like fiberbeds don’t get terribly hot, and since I liked mine last year, it will probably win.

Be sure to check out their clearance section. After far too much research, we decided a fiberbed would suit my son the best. I found one on clearance at BB&B today for 29.99. I had a $10 off coupon for a $30 or more purchase, so threw in the cheapest item in the store (39 cents) and got it for $20.

All three of my kids have featherbeds on their beds and they love them. We also have a lot extra ones that we put on the floor for the constant on-slaught of sleepover friends.
BB&B takes any coupons from any other store and they also take coupons that are expired.

2blue: what made you decide on the fiberbed? Also, BB&B is the way to go on most stuff, seeming they constantly send out coupons, and you can use LNT ones too!

Given my son’s preferences, from what I read here on CC it sounded like a memory foam would be a bad idea. I’d read here from some posters that the fiberbeds kept their loft better than featherbeds. Going to stores and comparing the two types, the fiberbed just felt like it would maintain loft more. So far as BB&B goes, I always save my coupons, and in this case with the clearance price and coupon thought it was the best product for the price we were going to find.

Just got back from the laundromat - kept putting off washing the comforter and bedding all summer until a “rainy” day and realized that D is leaving in 2 weeks! Luckily, it is raining today , so off I went. Got there and was just about to throw the featherbed in the industrial washer when I checked the tag and it said “Dry Clean Only”. So, I went to the counter (it is also our regular Dry Cleaners) and the clerk told me it would be $77.00 (!!) to have it cleaned. Not happening as we got it on-sale for about $25.00. We just bought it over Christmas break and it had spent the summer in one of those XL zip-lock bags, I decided to throw it into the dryer for about 20 minutes with some dryer sheets and it is just fine. Washed the comforter, the sham, and the bed skirt (which she actually did use last year) and now everything is packed in a new, fresh XL Zip Lock bag for the trip back to school. Wish I had seen this thread before I went so I wouldn’t have almost passed out at the counter when she told me the price to dry clean!

Boy am I confused. Having no familiarity with any of the mattress toppers, I had concluded that a memory foam pad topped by…well, something I saw online that was essentially a really puffy mattress pad created to go over memory foam (to keep from getting overheated) was the way to go. I had never heard of a fiberbed until spotting this thread. Can someone please explain what it is?

Like zipyourlips, this is foreign territory to me. To think that my oldest has gone three years in college without a topper/featherbed/etc - I feel like a terrible mom.

Researching this and seeing memory foam toppers ranging from $100 - $500. What’s the deal?

The mattresses at D1’s school are hard and covered with a vinyl like material. They are old! To make them softer and cushier (more like home) she wanted a feather bed on top of the mattress held on by a mattress pad. She loves it! We got it at Target or BB&B and It was under $100 and is going on its third year.We looked at the memory foam but she liked the other better…just a personal preference. Some kids at her school have their own mattresses from home brought in…yikes!

I got S2’s feather bed topper at BBB. It was $39.99 and I had a $10 coupon (so $29.99).
He said the bed he slept on at Orientation was like a 6 inch concrete slab!
He is somewhat of a sleepaholic…maybe I should have left him with the slab.
