^^ that’s how I remember it. Correct me if it’s wrong.

That looks about right BCB1993.

Nope that’s exactly it BCB

YES EXACTLY IT… NOW EVERYONE TAKE OUT UR LIL PENS AND PENCILS AND SEPERATE IT INTO 2 TRIANGLE AND 1 RECTANGLE and do ur area formulas and add them up

^how do you know the lengths and what not, though?

How do you know the lengths without finding the diagonal?

Oh, wait, you don’t. Calm down.

i know this doesn’t help, but this is how i looked at it.

ok…if the the corner of the 5 is at the center than draw a straight line right to the edge of the 4 square…that lines is equal to 2… then its all about guesstimation

i put 4.5 but i regret it now. its 4, though im still not 100% sure.

No points are given on the square… There’s no way to find it just by “drawing two triangles and a rectangle.” You can rotate the area to where it makes on large triangle with a base of 4 (length of side) and the height as the radius which was two. .542=4

I think this is right. I couldn’t think of any other way.

guesstimating would be absurd. there has to be a way to solve this

@TheUndertaker, i thought about that, but I wasn’t sure if that’s allowed. Soccersr, you’re not supporting your answer at all. You cannot guesstimate what you don’t know.

if anyone here is skilled w/ geometry sketchpad, can someone do it? lol

or 4^2 * .25 as i see it now haha

yeah its kind of a guesstimation prob

its 4… ok im not just guesstimating… if the point of the 5 square is at the center of the 4… the “radius” or the line you draw across is 2

I thought you said it was 4.5, though?

well youre right about not having to guesstimate, but i dont see another option. anyone know how to really solve this?

The math question with the 4x4 square and the 5x5 square (w/ vertex on the center of the 4x4) = 4. Here’s my reasoning…

Given that the overlapping section was the sections of 4x4 that crossed into 5x5.

Given that the central angle made by the side of a square = 90, and because its vertex was the center of the 4x4.

The area of the 4x4 is 16…duh…90 degree central angle off the center is going to give you 1/4th of the area (of the 4x4) no matter how you angle the 5x5 square, as a 90* angle extended past the edges of the 4x4.

1/4 * 16 = 4.

i wish i could take out a piece of paper, do the problem, take a pic and put it in here

so my way of looking at it was correct?
