Feb 22 Housing Choices?

I was recently accepted into UT and I'm planning on applying for housing on campus. I know it's pretty late already, but if I'm interested in having a dorm with a bathroom or even a single..what are my chances..and what dorms do you think are without a doubt full. Do you think there's spots open in San Jacinto, Brackenridge, creekside, Moore-hill, Prather, Roberts?

If you want your own bathroom or even your own room, it’s too late for UT dorms. Look at private dorms or even apartments.

@Ya Ya is living off campus freshman year a big disadvantage at UT? I know there’s a few private dorms and apartments close by but I’ve heard some pretty bad horror stories about them.

If I filled out my application today though, what dorms would I expect to get?

The majority of private dorms are just across the street from UT. Apartments locations depend on price (or price depends on location), there are some apartments practically across the street. There are also condos that you can lease through realtors, probably a couple of blocks from the campus.
I don’t have personal “horror stories” experience.
My daughter has an Honors Quad experience. Very quite and decent public, never heard any horror stories in this particular place. Problems: very small closets, laundry sometimes during the night in very inconvenient time due to high demand and long lines.
I read horror stories here on this forum about some apartments , I was also surprised to find information about apartment prices on websites different from actual prices. I don’t know if it’s bad web-designers or “bait &switch tactics”. I personally called a realtor, he solved all the problems.

How do I know what dorms?
Only UT Housing will know.
You might get Jester. If you are a boy you might get Creekside.
You might even get supplemental housing.

So you think even jester will be sold out or some of the other ones around it like Roberts?

Smaller dorms have more upperclassmen and smaller capacity, you usually have to apply early for space there.
Jester is usually available, it is mostly for freshmen.
Supplemental housing… I believe it will be offered if you applied in the end of March or later, but I might be mistaken.

Yeah I agree haha it’s just that everyone says that the dorms are already full, just hoping to get more info

I think year it will be really different since Callaway House opened to rave reviews and it is very popular. It really has helped the housing issue at Texas so I think if you want to be on campus, you should apply. I don’t think you will land Duren or San Jac but I think Jester is still a good possibility. The other thing you can do is piggy back your housing app with someone you know already applied and has not chosen a roommate. Housing will be is assigned to which ever roommate applied first.

Ok thanks for the info!

How does housing work for roommates that apply for housing at different times? For example, if I put down the deposit in November, he put it down now, and we requested to be roommates, would we get our preference in dorms?

Hey everyone, I transferred into UT in the Fall, and because of how late the admissions app was (March I think), I did not submit my housing app until March. Admission decisions were not made for me until June, yet I got a housing contract. If you want to live on campus, please do not feel intimidated by people saying it’s too late. I was able to get into my first choice dorm (Kinsolving - with a connecting bath), even though I applied very late.

As far as roommates go, not everything is guaranteed. If you haven’t already, I would call Housing on Monday to see if they can give you information on dorm availability.

If it’s me who was intimidating, then I said that it was too late for own bath / own room.
Kingsolving is a female dorm, so it’s not the most popular choice and is always available to the very end. It’s also one of the biggest dorms.
I believe mtmt31 is a male since he asked about Creekside (a male dorm)

Yes, finding a roommate who registered early is a good option (but NOT for an own room, there are no roommates there). The requirement for roommates is to have the same choice of dorms and the same preferences, otherwise you will not be matched.

There is already a 2018 UT Austin group on facebook where people are looking for roommates.

The first question on the housing app is if my first preference is a single or double room…if I put single, even though I know there isn’t a good chance I will get it but still would have it as my 1st choice, would it cause any problems with my choices…

or should I just apply shared space and pick the dorms I want to be in like roberts, brackenridge, prather, moore-hill…

You can change your preferences as many times as you want (deadline is in May???). You can do it AFTER finding roommate.
Dorms/rooms are assigned in July.

So my first priority should be to find a roommate?
