Febrary ACT 2012 Reading Discussion

<p>Frisbee, the question was asking to what “forbidding” referred to. Ecological was the most correct, as the specific section was discussing the extreme environment of the salt deserts.</p>

<p>Wasn’t the question something like, …because of _____ reasons?</p>

<p>@imokay what question are you asking about?</p>

<p>I think the questions was “what does forbidding mean”. Not 100% sure though… I can’t remember which I chose, I didn’t choose ecological.</p>

<p>Found the passage for the Salt Desert</p>

<p>[Desert</a> dreams: seeking the secret mammals of the salt pans | Natural History | Find Articles](<a href=“http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1134/is_9_112/ai_110737005/]Desert”>http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1134/is_9_112/ai_110737005/)</p>

<p>Found the one for the Niagra Falls, Mose Sharp</p>

<p>Did gravity refer to influence?</p>

<p>Reading is my best section (got a 35 in December), so I hope I did well again. I don’t think ecological was the answer, but I can’t remember the word I picked. Ecological certainly doesn’t mean forbidding though, I’m almost positive about that.</p>

<p>yes gravity is influence</p>

<p>Yes, I think gravity did mean influence.</p>

<p>@WhisperingMuse I think it meant forbidding as in what sense of the word.</p>

<p>@Somewhere I believe gravity was influence, that was for the constitution part, right?</p>

<p>Guys look at page 3 I found 3 of the 4 passages for reading</p>

<p>For the forbidding question here’s the text for it</p>

<p>“Few species, plant or animal, can survive in the forbidding habitat.”</p>

<p>If it isn’t ecological, what is it then?</p>

<p>I got a couple of different answers than the Iris2080 got… I wrote my responses below.</p>

<p>PROSE FICTION

  • She probably lives separately from her children.
    *** I got this answer
  • It did NOT mention Iker(spelling?) payed a lot of money for the bulb.
    *** I got this answer
  • She was satisfied that her house symbolized her family’s life or something.
    *** I got this answer
  • She compares her family to Roots
    *** I got this answer
  • Not used to being isolated
*** What were the other answer choices for this question? Part of me thinks I said this, but part of me says that I answered something else.
  • Interwining memories of past and the present
    *** I got this answer
  • It infers that she favorted stability over something
    *** I got this answer</p>

<p>It looks like I did pretty well on the first passage…</p>

<p>HUMANITIES

  • He was receiving less money
*** What was the question for this answer?
  • He got dumped by Mini(name?)
*** I said that he didn’t have a relationship of something like that with her
  • He made up(ad-libbed) the statement on the stage
*** I said it was from the script… I was pretty sure on this one.
  • “it” refers to his new partnership
    *** I got this answer
  • It did NOT state whether OTHER GUY was a straight man.
*** I have no idea what I put. What were the other answer choices?
  • The meeting between OTHER guy and author was something like coincidential because the OTHER guy was missing a straight man or something.
*** What were the other answer choices for this question?
  • Short meant missing
    *** I got this answer</p>

<p>Overall, I found this passage fairly difficult. I forget what I put for most of it too. Can someone help me out on the questions/answer choices that I can’t remember?</p>

<p>SOCIAL SCIENCE

  • Shows problems that states had drafting their constitution
    *** I got this answer
  • Illustrations answering several/few questions.
    *** I got this answer
  • It was a “slap in the face” because they did not even try to draft a constitution
*** Was this the same as the choice that said that they only changed the parts regarding their mother country?
  • The last paragraph meant that they’ll be able to mark a new something in the history (not sure about this one)
*** I am pretty sure that I 1) got something different and 2) your answer is incorrect. Anyone remember any of the other answer choices?
  • “Gravity” refers to influence
    *** I got this answer</p>

<p>I felt pretty good about this passage…</p>

<p>NATURAL SCIENCE

  • He was interested in the extra tissue in the v. rat’s mouth
    *** I got this answer
  • They all developed similar characteristics despite the geographical difference
    *** I got this answer
  • The passage was about plants and animals something in salt something (I can’t remember the wording, but I Remember the “idea”)
*** What were the other answer choices for this question? Something tells me that I chose something different…</p>

<p>@wcc</p>

<p>short meant missing
the text was
“If he’d been short a poodle for his trained-dog act, I would have drooped to the ground and wagged my tail.”</p>

<p>Arctk3, yes I got that correct as I mentioned in my post. Can you help me with some that I couldn’t fully remember?</p>

<p>Link to the humanities passage: [Niagara</a> Falls All Over Again](<a href=“http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/books/fc/2001-07-25-niagara-falls-all-over-again.htm]Niagara”>http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/books/fc/2001-07-25-niagara-falls-all-over-again.htm)</p>

<p>Depends on what you can’t remember and what I can xD</p>

<p>Also I think the scientist for the Natural Science question was surprised at how fast the rodent finished the leaves so fast since the text said</p>

<p>“As I gathered up the bits, I was astonished to find that they were the salt covering of the leaves. How did the rodent manage to strip the salt from the leaves so quickly?”</p>

<p>One of the questions asked what did the rats have in common? I put they all had high level concentration of urine in them. Because it mentioned for all 3 that their kidneys released a high level of urine concentration to dissolve the salt.</p>

<p>The text to support my answer are
“The succulent green leaf tissues that remain still contain high levels of salt, but the rat’s specialized kidneys produce a highly concentrated urine that removes those salts.”</p>

<p>“it feeds on the saltbush; it scrapes salt crystals from leaves with its lower incisors; and its kidneys excrete a highly concentrated urine.”</p>

<p>“And like the North American kangaroo rat and the North African fat sand rat, the South American plains viscacha rat also proved to have kidneys that produce highly concentrated urine.”</p>

<p>The Women and the Winter season passage</p>

<p><a href=“The Tiger Ladies: A Memoir of Kashmir - Sudha Koul - Google Books”>The Tiger Ladies: A Memoir of Kashmir - Sudha Koul - Google Books;

<p>Arctk…if I remember correctly it asked what they did NOT have in common…</p>

<p>Link to Natural Science passage: [Desert</a> dreams: seeking the secret mammals of the salt pans | Natural History | Find Articles](<a href=“http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1134/is_9_112/ai_110737005/]Desert”>http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1134/is_9_112/ai_110737005/)</p>

<p>Really? Then what was the answer?</p>

<p>I don’t remember :frowning:
But maybe somebody else does…</p>

<p>the first such species to be discovered was the chisel-toothed kangaroo rat for one of the Social Science questions</p>
