My son got
English-34
Math-34
Science-27
Composite-33

He’s 4.5 weighted GPA , AP classes, football, karate, social justice club, 3rd in his class of 109. Has had three years of mandarin Chinese. Stanford is first choice, EA, then Wash U, UC Berkely, UCLA, USC, maybe Vandy…chances with those tier schools??

If a 33 is all he is relying on, then Stanford will be a rather tough school to get into (unless you are in-state. In that case it will likely be easier. Same with harvard here with us in massachusetts)

The other schools are about right. He will likely get accepted into at least one of them.

Yay! I tested standby and it is finally showing as “Tested” online! Hopefully I will be getting my score within the week I REALLY, REALLY am hoping for a 33.

I used the “The Real ACT” and got it just three weeks before the Feb 11 exam. I did three complete practice exams–one each week. My scores in the practice exams ranged from 30-33. My score in December was 29 and my score in February was 32. Practicing the timing helped me a lot.

so that book really helps prepare for it, you think? i never tried that…made a 21, but wanna improve a lot hoping that this book will help…is it gonna be close to real act? Thanks for reply!

I’m both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised with this test. Surprisingly I did comparatively well on reading and science, considering reading and science have always been my hardest, poorest-scoring subjects (with the ACT). Also, considering I guessed on 7+ science questions, don’t think I did too bad.

What’s disappointing is that I did a lot worse than I thought I would on math. Math is normally my best subject, and I thought I had all but one or two problems down when I took the test. Apparently I made a lot of silly mistakes. Oh well, at least I improved. Just not as much as any other subject.

The irony is, I’m going into engineering, not liberal arts. Good thing I’m not going into a super-competitive school, or they’d be like “What’s this kid doing trying to get into engineering?” Oh well, I got what I wanted with the SAT already anyways (1330 CR+math), and I really can’t take the ACT again, so I’m pretty much free of this necessary evil…

Whatever the case, I did improve 7 points from my first ACT. Challenging coursework helps a little (I’m taking a lot more - you guessed it - math this semester, and it’s helped me with overall knowledge, speed, and accuracy). For slower test takers like me or those who don’t perform at their best under pressure, practice is a great way to improve. Practice with with retired tests if you can, but even the synthesized third-party tests are quite helpful, just make sure to do those first so you can save the real tests for just before the test.

Big disappointment in my eyes but not much I can do at this point but study study study more.
I am pleased with my Math and Science score but of course i want to get those up to at least 30s. Although my English and Reading scores are very low and i desperately need to get those up. Any suggestions on what i should do to try and get those up Ive taken a bunch of old tests but am going to buy a book this time and study a lot more.

Im probably leaning towards engineering which helps having a higher math and science score but I need to get it up. I did worse than ive been doing on old tests but I took those one part at a time. This was my first test full actual test and I hope to do better.

Any other suggestions for raising my english and reading scores other than just taking more tests would be very helpful thank you.

Now that I have my writing score,
Composite: 33
English: 31
Math: 33
Reading: 34
Science: 32
Essay: 11
English/Essay: 31

I am pleased. This is a massive improvement from my previous composite score of a 30 with a 29 in math. Hopefully this appeals much better to admissions! Now I can finally stop stressing about everything. Woo!

This is late but
Comp: 26
English: 28
Math: 24
Reading: 20
Science: 28
Writing: 10
Combined English Writing Score: 29
Retaking most definitely. But at least I don’t to the writing section anymore.

Do top tier colleges look at just the composite or the components? Trying to decide if he should retake it because of the lower english score. Opinions??

Ahhhhhhhhh… I want to get my scores!!! I hate how long standby testing takes to grade… with all the money that we pay, we should get it at the same time (it cost me like $100!!!)

@Mamalumper, the schools will look at both with most typically focusing primarily on the English and Math sections. However, a 34 composite is definitely good enough to get you into the best schools in the world. BUT, you obviously need to have the complete package (grades, ECs, etc.) If your son doesn’t think that this was just a fluke and that he will be able to improve to a 35 or 36, I would do it just to give me that tiny bit of an extra edge. It just depends on a lot of things…
